The South China Morning Post reported on January 9 that a Chinese professor recently caused a wave of public opposition when he declared that if a woman gives birth to 10 children, she will be able to live to 100 years old.

The professor's comments in Inner Mongolia, northern China, became the subject of controversy in a video that went viral on mainland social media in late December 2024.

"When women give birth, they will be blessed by God. This will help you live longer," the professor said in a lecture to students.

"Some women are successful in their careers but their life expectancy is short. They are not like the old ladies in the countryside who have 8-10 children and can live to 90, even 100 years old. They usually do not have any serious diseases and the possibility of getting sick is very low," he declared.

According to information, besides teaching, the professor used to work as a doctor at a hospital and earned 300,000 yuan (equivalent to 41,000 USD)/year.

The story has sparked heated discussion on social media, with many people condemning the professor for his statement.

“Does he have any scientific evidence to back up his point?” one user commented.

"Does he know about the risks women face during childbirth? Are those who die during childbirth blessed by God?" another person angrily asked.

"Are they crazy to keep pressuring us to have children? Raising children is extremely expensive,educating a child is also very tiring. I already have one child and I will not have another, no matter what experts or the government advises," the person added.

China is currently facing an aging population crisis, with many young people choosing not to get married or have children.

In 2022, the country's population decreased for the first time in 60 years. By 2023, the country's population continued to decrease by 2.08 million people, with a record low birth rate of 6.39 children per 1,000 people.

The Chinese government has tried a number of measures to address the situation, including cash rewards and tax cuts, but their efforts appear to have had little tangible effect.

Previously in December 2024, Professor Wang Xianju working at Renmin University of China in Beijing also faced criticism when he asked a Kazakh diplomat how to make Chinese women "obedient and obediently give birth".
