Right from the beginning of the 2024-2025 school year, the Department of Education and Training has directed educational institutions to proactively develop plans to equip students with life skills and self-protection skills, suitable for each age group. Educational content focuses on practical issues such as: preventing drowning, traffic accidents, fires, child abuse, school violence, safety in cyberspace, behavior in public places, etc. From that orientation, in the first semester, the whole sector organized over 1,000 direct propaganda sessions, attracting more than 400,000 students, teachers, and administrators to participate. Indirect communication activities through loudspeakers, social networks, and class zalo groups were also deployed over 2,000 times, with the total number of students reached estimated at over 750,000 people.
The highlight of life skills education implementation is the innovation of organization methods, shifting from passive propaganda to interactive activities and real-life experiences. Many schools have organized practice sessions simulating hypothetical situations; group activities; forums "Students talk about life skills"; themed flag-raising activities; and established life skills clubs and accident and injury prevention skills clubs.
At Viet Bac High School (Lang Son city), life skills education is carried out throughout the lessons and extracurricular activities. The school has integrated topics on preventing school violence, social media behavior skills, fire prevention and fighting, first aid, etc. to help students not only understand but also know how to do and respond in real-life situations. Similarly, at Cao Loc Ethnic Boarding Secondary and High School, life skills lessons are held periodically, with rich and familiar content. Dam Minh Khanh, a student in class 9A1, Cao Loc Ethnic Boarding Secondary and High School, said: “Such lessons help us better understand dangerous situations in life and how to handle them. I feel more confident knowing how to protect myself and help my friends.”
Along with that, educational institutions have proactively coordinated with the police, youth union, court, parents' association... to organize many integrated activities such as competitions, seminars, dramatization, field trips to prisons, mock trials... One of the notable highlights is the effective implementation of school psychological counseling activities. Up to now, 100% of general education institutions in the province have established psychological counseling - social work teams; each school has at least one manager or teacher who has been trained and certified in school psychological counseling. The counseling teams are active and timely support students with psychological difficulties, conflicts in peer relationships, academic or family pressure.
In parallel, more than 1,300 skill, cultural and sports clubs are operating actively in schools. This is an environment that helps students develop their strengths, cultivate life skills, train their physical and mental health and social adaptability. In addition to school activities, the province currently has 5 licensed non-public life skills centers, contributing to diversifying the after-school skills education environment.
Ms. Phan My Hanh, Deputy Director of the Department of Education and Training emphasized: “In recent times, the provincial education sector has implemented many synchronous solutions to equip students with life skills, from integrating them into teaching content, organizing extracurricular activities, practical experiences to building a team of school psychological counselors and promoting the effectiveness of skill clubs at schools. In the coming time, we will continue to direct educational institutions to regularly maintain this activity, integrating it more deeply into the educational program.”
With the strong direction of the industry, the close coordination of families and the community, a safe, friendly and modern school environment in Lang Son is gradually being formed. The knowledge and skills that students accumulate are solid provisions for them to grow up and enter life with confidence and initiative.
