Recently, a workshop organized by the Vietnam Pediatric Association and the Vietnam Obstetrics and Gynecology Association in collaboration with Mead Johnson Nutrition Vietnam brought together 20 leading experts in obstetrics, pediatrics, neonatology, digestion and nutrition to share experiences and discuss issues related to cesarean-born children and early nutritional solutions to help improve children's health.
Continuing the series of international activities, the Vietnam Midwives Association also coordinated with Mead Johnson Nutrition Vietnam to organize the workshop "2024 ASEAN Regional Nurse Nutrition and Brain Academy" in Da Nang with the participation of 100 head nurses, head midwives, tour leaders, ... from major hospitals in Vietnam and Thailand.
Also at this workshop, medical staff approached the solution of perfecting nutrition according to needs to give babies a comprehensive start, especially comprehensive support for children born by cesarean section through nutrition.
Limiting the impact of cesarean section on the health of children
Dr. Nguyen Ba My Nhi emphasized that supportive solutions to improve the disadvantages that children born by cesarean section face are very necessary - Photo: MJ
According to Dr. Nguyen Ba My Nhi, Director of the Obstetrics and Gynecology Center, Tam Anh General Hospital, the intestinal microflora is formed immediately after birth and plays many important roles in health, especially for newborns.
“Children born by cesarean section are often susceptible to bacterial dysbiosis. In the short term, children born by cesarean section have a higher rate of infection, especially respiratory infections, and hospitalization in the early stages of life than children born naturally. In the long term, the incomplete maturation of the intestinal microflora can cause disruption of the gut-brain-lung-skin axis. With the increasing rate of cesarean section, supportive solutions to improve the disadvantages that children born by cesarean section face are essential,” Dr. Nguyen Ba My Nhi emphasized.
Breast milk is the optimal source of nutrition to help shape and develop beneficial intestinal microflora for children.
However, the pressures of cesarean section can affect the mother's milk production. In cases where breast milk is not available, formula milk with a composition similar to breast milk is a solution to help restore intestinal microflora and support the gut-immune-brain axis.
Dr. Luu Thi My Thuc stated that nutritional interventions by breastfeeding or formula feeding can help restore the intestinal microflora for cesarean-born babies - Photo: MJ
Therefore, according to Dr. Luu Thi My Thuc - Head of the Department of Clinical Nutrition, National Children's Hospital - nutritional interventions in the first 1000 days of life by breastfeeding or formula feeding can supplement nutrients to help restore the intestinal microflora for children born by cesarean section.
Supports immune system enhancement and brain development
Specifically, the prebiotics 2′-FL, PDX/GOS help support the growth of beneficial bacteria not only Bifidobacterial but also Lactobacilli, helping to reduce the risk of infection, reduce inflammatory response, regulate immunity, and reduce the rate of antibiotic use.
MFGM (fat globule membrane) and DHA binding proteins help provide immune regulatory mediators, activate and regulate immune responses, thereby helping children reduce the risk of common respiratory and digestive tract infections, reduce the number of fever days and the risk of using antipyretic drugs.
Nutritional supplements with high levels of MFGM and DHA help children reach brain development milestones 1-2 months earlier and last up to 5.5 years old.
Supplementing essential nutrients MFGM, DHA, 2'FL HMO, PDX/GOS can help reduce the impact of cesarean section on changes in intestinal microbiota, improving both short-term and long-term immune and brain health for children, especially in the early stages of life.

Along with the above analysis, Dr. Nguyen Thi Thu Loan also introduced the Enfamil C-Sec nutritional solution, which is designed to supplement even children born by cesarean section with the C-Biome MFGM, DHA, 2'FL HMO, PDX/GOS nutrient system, which is clinically proven to help reduce the impact of cesarean section on changes in intestinal microflora, support the strengthening of the immune system and improve short-term and long-term brain development for children, especially in the early stages of life.
