Enough water for daily use during the dry season
Up to now, people of ethnic minorities in mountainous communes such as Pa U, Thu Lum, Pa Ve Su, Ta Tong... of Muong Te district, Lai Chau province often use stream water for bathing, washing, eating, and drinking. Every day, people go to the stream to carry water for daily activities. Water sources are often in short supply during the dry season and are often polluted due to people letting their livestock roam freely...
However, with the high determination of Lai Chau provincial authorities at all levels, especially the State's investment and support for national target programs, new rural support programs, poverty reduction programs 135, 30a... for ethnic minorities, economically underdeveloped areas have gradually improved the quality of life: village roads; clean water works, hygiene; community houses are given priority investment.
Mr. Vu Van Cuong, Vice Chairman of Muong Te District People's Committee, said: In the past time, from the capital sources of national target programs, new rural areas, program 135, program 30a... Muong Te district has focused on prioritizing the construction of clean water projects to ensure water sources for people in the district. From there, helping people feel secure in production and stabilize their lives.
Up to now, the District People's Committee has invested in building 114 clean water projects for communes and villages in the area under the capital of the 135/CP, 30a/CP, and new rural programs... Water sources are taken from streams, springs, headwaters, and underground water flows through pipes straight to the tanks. Depending on each village, each tank can hold 5 - 20m3 of water depending on the water source and the needs of the people. All projects are built in residential areas, far from areas at risk of landslides to ensure the effectiveness of the projects.
Using clean water is a great desire of the people, especially those in remote areas, ethnic minority areas. After many years, people have had to live with a lack of water for daily use and unsanitary water sources... Now, clean water has reached the village, people do not have to spend a lot of time carrying water back to use like before. - Mr. Cuong said.
Ms. Chieu Tai Mui, Bum To commune, shared: In the past, to have water for daily use, my family often had to carry water for kilometers, which was both tiring and time-consuming, and the water source from the streams was not hygienic, affecting our health. Especially in the dry season, we had to travel dozens of kilometers to get water for drinking. Since the Party, State, and government have paid attention to investing in building clean water facilities for the village, my family has been very happy because the water source is both clean and convenient. With water coming to the village, we have more time to focus on labor and production to develop the economy, reduce hunger and reduce poverty. Since then, we have not had to worry about rice shortages or water shortages.
Save time… focus on production to reduce poverty
According to Mr. Vu Van Cuong, Vice Chairman of Muong Te District People's Committee: In recent times, clean water has always been an issue of concern to authorities at all levels and professional agencies of the district. Currently, in the district, the number of households using hygienic water is 95.9%. The number of households not using clean water is 4.1%. From 2016 to 2022, the rate of households using hygienic water has increased to 9,968 households/10,389 households. There are 10 newly invested and put into use clean water works in 08 communes of the district.
To effectively manage, exploit, use and ensure long-term sustainability of domestic water works. Currently, the People's Committees of communes and towns assigned to manage domestic water works have established management teams in the villages. At the same time, they have developed operating regulations, urged management teams to operate, and make minor repairs monthly, quarterly... to ensure the supply of domestic water to the people.
In addition, the professional agency of Muong Te district also actively coordinates with communes and towns to propagate and popularize techniques for repairing clean water works invested by the State. Along with that, mobilize people to raise awareness of using water economically in conjunction with the task of protecting forests, especially in areas where water sources are located. Regularly clean water tanks, do not discharge or throw garbage around tanks, ensure clean water sources. At water channels and upstream water springs, do not graze livestock, do not cultivate fields, regularly clear weeds; proactively check pipes and the quality of domestic water works, if any problems are detected, promptly notify local authorities for handling.
The centralized water supply project has made an important contribution to improving and enhancing the lives of people in Muong Te district. Realizing the value of clean water projects, people have strictly complied with the management, operation and use of the projects, and the projects have really brought into play their effectiveness. The effectiveness of clean water projects has been contributing to gradually changing the appearance and lives of people here, especially ethnic minorities.
In addition to clean water works for daily life, Muong Te district has also built 139 irrigation works to irrigate rice fields, corn fields, and crops, ensuring the right season, increasing productivity, contributing to hunger eradication and poverty reduction. In addition, the whole district has 57 clean water works in good use, 34 works operating at an average level, 16 poor and damaged works are being repaired and repaired in the coming time.
