Decoding alien-like signals from 2023

(CLO) Scientists have decoded an alien-like message using raw data from three observatories on Earth.

In May 2023, the European Space Agency's ExoMars Trace Gas Orbiter spacecraft orbiting Mars transmitted a signal containing an alien-like message. Three observatories on Earth picked up the signal and published the raw data online, giving scientists around the world a chance to decode the message.

Ken Chaffin and his daughter Keli, who worked to decode the message for nearly a year, found the answer in June, the European Space Agency announced on Oct. 22. The Chaffins said it took them thousands of hours of testing different ideas and running mathematical simulations on computers to do so.

The message is envisioned as five configurations representing amino acids, the building blocks of life. The project's designers have confirmed that the signal is amino acids, but they cannot explain why it is amino acids.

The signal was sent from Mars to Earth, traveling 16 minutes through space before being picked up by the Allen Telescope Array in Northern California, the Robert C. Byrd Green Bank Telescope and the Medicina Radio Astronomy Station near Bologna, Italy.

Scientists then extracted the raw data with other data from the Mars spacecraft. It took about 10 days to extract and visualize the data, but decoding the message took even longer.

When Ken Chaffin stumbled upon the original image from the messy raw data, known as a “star map,” he suspected a cellular automaton algorithm had created it. Cellular automatons are grids of units that are mathematically coded to move or follow certain sets of rules. “I knew I had the skills to decode the message,” he said confidently, having decades of amateur experience working with cellular automatons.

By running cellular automaton simulations on the "star map," Chaffins was eventually able to create images of amino acids.

“I had no idea what the message would show or say. I suspected it might be related to life,” he said. When the image of the clusters appeared, Chaffin said he immediately recognized them as amino acids.

Scientists are now grappling with the meaning behind this mysterious cosmic puzzle. So far, the community involved in the project has not been able to identify and agree on the meaning of the amino acids.
