The Formula 1 Powerboat World Championship is the highest level of speedboat racing in the world and as such shares the F1 title, similar to F1 car racing. The competition is organised by the Union Internationale Motonautique (UIM) and promoted by H2O Racing, and is often referred to as F1H2O.
The Formula 1 Powerboat World Championship promises to be full of drama.
Similar to Formula 1 racing, UIM F1H2O will compete in 6-8 Grand Prix races with about 10 racing teams from different countries, each team will consist of 2 members. Each Grand Prix will take place in Europe, Asia and the Middle East.
The stages will have 3 days of competition, the first day will be the competition for the Pole (also known as the starting position), the second day will be the Sprint Race, and the last day will be the competition to find the champion of the race.
The exciting speed race of the athletes
This is considered one of the most exciting water races with a combination of speed, adventure and competitive rules. Each official race usually lasts about 45 minutes. Each lap is more than 2,000 m long.
Notably, the motorboats with a total weight of up to 400 kg will compete fiercely with speeds of up to 250 km/h. Not only is it attractive because of the acceleration and cornering on every meter of water, but the collisions also create a unique attraction for F1H2O.
In terms of rules, the race is divided into 3 days. Day 1 is qualifying, day 2 is sprint and day 3 is deciding. The results of each day have a direct impact on the final result.
During the race, there will be many risks and accidents such as capsizing, sinking, machinery damage, and even boats colliding with each other. Therefore, a yellow flag will be signaled if one of these situations occurs so that the rescue team can pull the boat back. In such a situation, the athletes may have to miss the race day.
The UIM F1H2O tournament is scheduled to take place from March 29 to March 31 at Thi Nai lagoon, Quy Nhon city (Binh Dinh).
In Southeast Asia, Vietnam and Indonesia are the two countries that host a race at F1H2O. However, only Vietnam has its own racing team, sponsored by Fleur de Lys Hospitality Company, with the support of Binh Dinh Provincial People's Committee.
The cost of organizing the tournament is huge, just one motorboat costs about 18 billion VND, each team needs at least 3 boats/season. Therefore, this sport is often popular in rich countries such as Italy, Sweden, Qatar and especially the UAE (with 3 racing teams in the 2024 season).
