"The US-Iran talks look relatively positive, which allows people to start thinking about the possibility of a resolution. The immediate consequence would be that Iranian crude oil will not be taken off the market," said Harry Tchilinguirian, head of research at Onyx Capital Group.
The market also has lower liquidity due to the Easter holiday, which could exacerbate price swings, he added.
The United States and Iran have agreed to begin drafting the framework for a potential nuclear deal, Iran’s foreign minister said after talks that a U.S. official described as making “very good progress.” The progress follows U.S. sanctions last week on an independent Chinese refiner that the U.S. accused of processing Iranian crude, increasing pressure on Tehran.
Markets were also under pressure after US President Donald Trump renewed his criticism of the Federal Reserve, saying the US economy could slow unless interest rates were cut immediately.
Gold prices rose to another record, and the jitters spread to energy markets on demand concerns, analysts said. Wall Street's major indexes each lost more than 1%.
"The risk-off sentiment in the market is pushing stocks lower today," said Phil Flynn, senior analyst at Price Futures Group.
Meanwhile, OPEC+, a group of major producers including the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries and allies such as Russia, is still expected to increase output by 411,000 barrels per day starting in May.
However, some of that increase could be offset by production cuts from countries that have exceeded their quotas.
A Reuters poll on April 17 showed investors believe the tariffs will cause a significant slowdown in the U.S. economy this year and next, with the median probability of a recession in the next 12 months nearing 50%. The United States is the world's largest oil consumer.
Investors are watching a number of US economic data releases this week, including preliminary manufacturing and services PMIs for April, for guidance on the economy.
“This week’s batch of PMI data could further highlight the economic impact of tariffs, with both manufacturing and services conditions across major economies expected to weaken,” said IG’s Yeap, adding that oil prices are facing resistance at $70.
