Oil prices today (April 21): World oil prices started the new trading week with a drop of more than 1%. Domestic oil prices are unlikely to record a hat-trick of declines.
World oil prices
According to Oilprice, at 5:30 a.m. on April 21 (Vietnam time), Brent and WTI oil prices suddenly fell more than 1% as concerns about supply shortages eased due to progress in nuclear negotiations between the US and Iran.

The United States and Iran will resume talks this week aimed at reaching a potential nuclear deal, Reuters reported. US President Donald Trump, who abandoned the 2015 nuclear accord between Tehran and world powers during his first term in 2018, has threatened to attack Iran unless it quickly reaches a new agreement to prevent Tehran from developing nuclear weapons.
Last week, oil prices were supported by Washington's decision to tighten sanctions on Iranian crude exports, OPEC's announcement of deeper monthly production cuts, a weaker US dollar, and hopes of a US-European Union trade deal.
By “pocketing” about 5%, oil prices have narrowed nearly half of the “losses” of the previous two weeks, recovering from a four-year low.
Last week, although trade relations between the US and China remained “tense,” Beijing said it was always ready to negotiate on the basis of equality and mutual respect.
This week, several countries have planned trade negotiations, bilateral negotiations with the US to narrow tariff barriers that could negatively impact the world economy .
Investors will also focus on data on the US manufacturing and services purchasing managers index (PMI) and weekly jobless claims during the week to see whether the US Federal Reserve will keep or cut interest rates at its next policy meetings.

In contrast to the European Central Bank (ECB) cutting interest rates by another 25 basis points to 2.25% last week and the possibility of further easing in the coming months, the Fed is still “waiting” to see what actually happens to trade and other policies in the wake of the US tariffs before deciding on any adjustments related to interest rates. Since December 2024, the Fed has continuously maintained the policy rate at 4.25% - 4.5%.
In the Russia-Ukraine tensions, the two countries have accused each other of violating a one-day ceasefire over Easter. The apparent failure to observe the Easter ceasefire suggests that President Trump will have a hard time reaching a lasting agreement to end the conflict in Ukraine.
The World Trade Organization (WTO) has cut its forecast for global trade growth this year from +3% to -0.2%, citing the risk of escalating tariffs. If the US imposes reciprocal tariffs, global trade could fall to -1.5%, raising concerns about falling energy demand.
Domestic gasoline prices
Domestic retail prices of gasoline on April 21 are as follows:
E5 RON 92 gasoline is not more than 18,498 VND/liter. RON 95-III gasoline is not more than 18,856 VND/liter. Diesel oil not more than 17,037 VND/liter. Kerosene not more than 17,184 VND/liter. Fuel oil not exceeding 15,960 VND/kg. |
The above domestic retail prices of gasoline and oil will be adjusted by the Ministry of Finance and the Ministry of Industry and Trade in the price management session on the afternoon of April 24. Due to the increase in world gasoline and oil prices last week, domestic gasoline and oil prices are likely to increase. However, if world gasoline and oil prices drop dramatically in the first trading sessions of this week, domestic gasoline and oil prices could set a hat-trick of decreases.
In the most recent price adjustment, the price of E5 RON 92 gasoline decreased by 384 VND/liter, RON 95-III gasoline decreased by 351 VND/liter, diesel decreased by 206 VND/liter, kerosene decreased by 229 VND/liter. Only fuel oil increased by 58 VND/kg.
