Oil prices today April 18, 2025: Oil prices rose to a two-week high amid low liquidity ahead of the Easter holiday after the United States imposed new sanctions to limit Iran's oil exports, adding to supply concerns.

New sanctions on Iranian oil exports and tough comments on the issue from the US Treasury Department are adding to supply concerns and helping to support crude prices, UBS analyst Giovanni Staunovo said.

Sanctions issued by the Trump administration on Wednesday, including targeting a Chinese-based oil refinery — often referred to as a “teapot refinery,” — are increasing pressure on Tehran amid negotiations over its nuclear program.

“New US sanctions on ‘teapot’ refineries for buying Iranian crude are unlikely to stop the flow of Iranian crude to China… Sanctions on local ports and banks are likely to pose more challenges,” said Energy Aspects analyst Livia Gallarati.

On the supply side, the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) said it had received updated plans from Iraq, Kazakhstan and other countries to cut output further to compensate for pumping above quotas.

“Regarding OPEC+ policy, there is currently little evidence that the planned compensatory cuts will be followed,” Gallarati added.

Supporting prices on Thursday, U.S. gasoline and distillate inventories fell last week, the Energy Information Administration (EIA) said on Wednesday.

OPEC, the International Energy Agency and several banks, including Goldman Sachs and JPMorgan, cut their forecasts for oil prices and demand growth this week as U.S. tariffs and retaliatory measures from other countries threw global trade into turmoil.

Specifically, the price of E5 RON 92 gasoline decreased by VND384/liter, down to VND18,498/liter; RON 95 gasoline decreased by VND351/liter, down to VND18,856/liter.

The price of 0.05S diesel decreased by VND206/liter to VND17,037/liter; kerosene decreased by VND229/liter to VND17,184/liter; the price of 180CST 3.5S mazut increased by VND58/kg to VND15,960/kg.

In this management period, the Ministry of Industry and Trade - Ministry of Finance did not set aside or use the Petroleum Price Stabilization Fund for E5RON92 gasoline, RON95 gasoline, diesel oil, kerosene, and mazut oil.

Thus, from the beginning of 2025 to now, domestic gasoline prices have undergone 16 adjustment sessions, including 7 decrease sessions, 6 increase sessions and 3 opposite sessions.
