President Donald Trump’s erratic tax policy changes have created a new wave of concern in the oil market. For the second day in a row, both OPEC and the International Energy Agency (IEA) have lowered their forecasts for global oil demand for 2025. The IEA even said that this year’s growth could be the lowest in the past five years.
Major banks including UBS, BNP Paribas and HSBC have revised down their oil price forecasts for this year and next. If trade tensions continue to escalate, Brent could fall to $40–$60 a barrel in the coming months, according to UBS expert Giovanni Staunovo. Oil prices have fallen about 14% this month due to a combination of tax concerns and increased OPEC+ production.
However, the market also received some support from the news that President Trump is considering adjusting import tariffs on cars from Mexico and some other countries, helping to stabilize investor sentiment in the stock market.
