On the morning of April 16, 2025, world oil prices recorded mixed fluctuations. According to Reuters, Brent crude oil prices fell slightly by 21 cents to 64.67 USD/barrel, while WTI crude oil fell by 20 cents, closing at 61.33 USD/barrel.
However, in the early trading session, Brent oil continued to decrease slightly while WTI oil tended to increase again.
Analysts say the uncertainty from US trade policy is the main reason for the difficulties in the global oil market. The Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) has had to adjust down its forecast for oil demand this year.
The International Energy Agency (IEA) also forecasts that global oil demand growth in 2025 will be the slowest in five years, partly due to the impact of new tariffs proposed by President Donald Trump.
The uncertainty has forced major banks such as UBS, BNP Paribas and HSBC to cut their oil price forecasts, while US bank executives have warned of risks to consumer purchasing power if the tariff situation is not brought under control soon.
In addition, import prices in the US fell unexpectedly in March, mainly due to lower energy costs, which could signal slowing inflation before the new tax policies officially take effect.
Regarding inventories, data from the American Petroleum Institute showed that in the week ending April 11, crude oil inventories increased by 2.4 million barrels, while gasoline inventories decreased by 3 million barrels and distillate inventories decreased by 3.2 million barrels.
These fluctuations show that the market is still adjusting to unpredictable supply and demand and is strongly affected by global policies.
On April 16, domestic retail gasoline prices remained stable compared to the previous adjustment period. Currently, the price of E5 RON 92 gasoline does not exceed VND 18,882/liter, while RON 95-III gasoline is at a maximum of VND 19,207/liter.
Diesel is sold at no more than VND17,243/liter, kerosene is VND17,413/liter and fuel oil is VND15,902/kg.
It is expected that on the afternoon of April 17, the Ministry of Finance - Ministry of Industry and Trade will conduct the next price adjustment period. In the context of the downward trend in world oil prices last week, domestic prices are also expected to continue to decrease slightly. However, this trend may reverse if world crude oil prices rebound in the first sessions of the week.
In the most recent adjustment, the prices of petroleum products were all adjusted down sharply.
Specifically, E5 RON 92 gasoline decreased by VND1,491/liter, RON 95-III gasoline decreased by VND1,712/liter. Diesel, kerosene and fuel oil also decreased by VND1,100 to more than VND1,300 per unit, contributing to reducing cost pressure for consumers and businesses.
