From March 1, the regulation on increasing the ceiling price of air tickets officially took effect. Airlines consider this a "lifebuoy" to offset costs when the more flights they fly, the more losses they incur. However, this has made travel businesses "sit on fire" because the increase in air ticket prices coincides with the peak holiday season of April 30 - May 1 and the upcoming summer travel season, which could have a huge impact on the tourism industry.
Booking a flight ticket for the trip from Hanoi to Quy Nhon on April 30 more than a month in advance, Mr. Pham Quang Tuyen (Hoang Mai, Hanoi) was still surprised by the sky-high ticket prices. The cheapest ticket, with a late flight time, was about 5 million VND/round-trip ticket. And a ticket at a good time, on the weekend, was more than 7 million VND/ticket.
"With 4 people in the family, the ticket price alone costs at least 20 million VND, so I had to move to another less expensive location," said Mr. Tuyen.
On the morning of March 23, round-trip airfares from Hanoi to Phu Quoc departing on April 28 and returning on May 3 ranged from 5 million to over 7 million VND/ticket. This price is 2.5 million VND/ticket higher than the current price.
Specifically, Vietnam Airlines ticket price is 7.6 million VND (including taxes and fees), Vietjet Air is 5.5 million VND, Vietravel Airlines is 6.6 million VND.
Meanwhile, for the Hanoi - Nha Trang flight departing on April 28 and returning on May 3, the best price found on the morning of March 23 was 3.9 million VND/round-trip ticket and the highest was 7.7 million VND, 1.2 - 1.5 million VND higher than the current time.
Ticket prices for flights departing from Ho Chi Minh City during the period of April 30 - May 3 are also not affordable. According to a survey, the lowest round-trip ticket price for the Ho Chi Minh City - Phu Quoc route of Vietravel Airlines is 3 million VND; Vietjet Air is 3.3 million VND; Vietnam Airlines is 3.9 million VND.
The Ho Chi Minh City - Nha Trang flight during this holiday is considered to have the cheapest ticket price compared to other flights, ranging from 2.7 - 3.2 million VND/round trip ticket.
Specifically, a round-trip ticket from Ho Chi Minh City to Nha Trang departing on April 28 and returning on May 3 of Bamboo Airways costs 2.7 million VND, Vietjet Air is 3.1 million VND and Vietnam Airlines is 3.2 million VND.
Mr. Tran Dang Trung, Director of the ticket office in Go Vap, Ho Chi Minh City, said that airfares for the April 30-May 1 holiday and this summer are expected to be about 30-40% higher than the same period last year and compared to the current time. The reason is that airlines will adjust ticket prices after the regulation on domestic airfares being allowed to increase the ceiling price.
In addition, the current demand for domestic and international tourists is not too high, so airlines have not increased capacity to supply tickets during peak season. The low number of tickets contributes to the price increase.
According to forecasts, the number of domestic and international tourists will increase rapidly compared to 2023. Therefore, in the coming time, airfares will hardly cool down in the context that airlines such as Vietnam Airlines and Vietjet Air are in the aircraft maintenance phase.
Meanwhile, some airlines have temporarily suspended operations to restructure, for example, Pacific Airlines has completely stopped all flights while Bamboo Airways recently announced that it will stop operating direct flights from Hanoi to Con Dao.
