The world gold price increased by 44 USD/ounce to 3,444 USD/ounce, the highest level ever achieved by gold. The most active June gold contract jumped 92.2 USD (2.8%), closing at 3,434 USD/ounce. The gold market witnessed a price increase of more than 440 USD in just 9 trading days. Increased buying pressure in the market along with the falling USD price supported the strong increase of gold.
Gold prices surged to an all-time high, breaking above $3,400 for the first time in history as markets were shaken by fresh criticism of Federal Reserve policy from US President Donald Trump. Investors rushed to gold as US stocks fell sharply amid heightened tensions between US President Donald Trump and the Fed, with Mr Trump accusing Mr Powell of “playing politics” by refusing to cut interest rates.
Meanwhile, Fed Chairman Jerome Powell said that interest rates should not be lowered until there is more clarity on whether Trump's tax plan could cause a persistent increase in inflation. At the end of the trading session on April 21, the Dow Jones index fell 971.82 points (equivalent to 2.48%) to 38,170.41 points. The S&P 500 index lost 2.36% to 5,158.20 points, and the Nasdaq Composite index fell 2.55% to 15,870.9 points./.
