Gold bar prices tumbled this week after reaching a peak of VND120 million/tael. Yesterday, despite being the weekend, SJC continuously adjusted the buying and selling prices of gold bars and is currently buying at VND112 million and selling at VND114 million, down VND6 million even though world gold prices remain unchanged. The difference between buying and selling gold bars has narrowed to VND2 million compared to the high of VND4 million yesterday morning.
Those who bought gold bars at the peak of 120 million VND/tael will now lose 8 million VND if they sell. Compared to last weekend, each tael of gold bar still recorded an increase of 9 million VND in buying and 7.5 million VND in selling.
Domestic gold price plummeted 6 million VND over the weekend
Similarly, 4-number 9 gold rings of 1-2 chi at SJC also fluctuated like gold bars. During the week, gold rings increased to 117 million VND/tael, but now they have sharply decreased to 113.5 million VND for selling and 109.5 million VND for buying. Notably, the difference between buying and selling prices of gold rings at SJC remains high at 4 million VND/tael, double the gap of gold bars. This has caused those who were at the peak of gold rings in the previous two days to lose nearly 8 million VND/tael.
The world gold price set a new all-time record this week but quickly cooled down to 3,327 USD/ounce. In contrast to the Vietnamese market, the world gold price recorded a decrease of 20 USD after one week. Due to the sharp increase in domestic gold, each tael of SJC gold bar is nearly 10 million VND more expensive than the world price, nearly double the difference of last week.
Many analysts still believe that gold prices will continue to rise. In a Kitco News survey of 16 Wall Street analysts for next week's gold price forecast, 10, or 63%, predicted gold prices would rise. In contrast, 4, or 25%, thought the precious metal would continue to decline, and 2 analysts said gold would be flat. Similarly, in a Main Street survey of 312 individual investors, 195, or 63%, predicted gold would rise; another 57, or 18%, thought gold would fall, and the remaining 60, or 19%, said the precious metal would be flat.
