The world gold price at one point in the session of April 16 (US time) reached an all-time high of 3,352 USD/ounce. Many analysts believe that the reason is due to the weakening USD and the escalating US-China trade tensions, which have pushed investors to turn to safe-haven assets such as gold.
On April 15, US President Donald Trump ordered an investigation into the possibility of imposing tariffs on all types of important minerals imported into the US. On the same day, the White House released a fact sheet listing the tariff actions on imported goods from partners from April 2. Accordingly, Chinese goods face a 245% tariff when imported into the US. This tariff includes a 125% reciprocal tariff, a 20% fentanyl crisis response tariff, and specific commodity tariffs under Section 301, ranging from 7.5 - 100%.
But not all Chinese products are subject to the 245% tariff, according to The New York Times, with only a few products such as syringes and needles being subject to this tariff. This item was first taxed during President Donald Trump's first term.
In September 2024, President Biden increased it to 100%. Add a 20% tax on fentanyl and a 125% reciprocal tax, and the total tax rate on Chinese syringes and needles will be 245%... However, this marks an escalation between the world's two largest economies./.
