A tribal settlement under the Vallakkadavu forest range inside the Periyar Tiger Reserve (PTR) in Idukki district (Kerala state, India) is reaping rich dividends through organic farming, The Hindu reported.
Accordingly, Vanchivayal village, a tribal settlement comprising 73 families of the Oorali community, won the second best organic tribal village award in the state of Kerala on August 10. Earlier, Vanchivayal village had also won a similar award in 2017.
According to officials, the tribes have been cultivating pepper, ginger, coffee and turmeric through organic farming since 2003, producing nearly 30 to 40 tonnes of pepper every year.
The products were exported to Germany through the government-supported Ecological Development Commission (EDC).
Organic pepper from Vanchivayal guarantees a premium of nearly 30% to 40% over the market price every year. Not only this, organic pepper from this village has been exported to Germany for 15 consecutive years.
