Pepper price today April 19, 2025: Sharp decline

Domestic pepper prices are showing signs of a strong recovery after a long period of being affected by concerns over the US’s reciprocal tax policy. The increased demand has created new vitality for the market, giving many businesses the opportunity to renegotiate prices in old contracts.

According to the Vietnam Pepper and Spice Association (VPSA), the demand for pepper imports from major markets such as the US, Europe, Asian countries, especially China, is increasing again. Meanwhile, the domestic pepper harvest is coming to an end. However, farmers are in no hurry to sell because they have previously made high profits from other crops such as durian and coffee.

In addition, information about lower output in 2025 compared to the previous year also contributed to the possibility of higher pepper prices. Some opinions predict that prices may exceed 160,000 VND/kg if demand continues to be strong.

However, the Vietnamese pepper industry is also facing risks when the US imposes a 10% tax while the two sides are still in the 90-day negotiation period. Ms. Hoang Thi Lien, Chairwoman of VPSA, said that if the results are not positive, Vietnam may lose its market share in the US to competitors such as Indonesia and Brazil. In this context, businesses are advised to proactively expand to new markets, especially the European market.

The EU market is showing signs of positive recovery, with total pepper imports in 2024 increasing by 20% compared to 2023, reaching more than 120,000 tons. Vietnam continues to hold the leading position here with 52.1% market share. However, the EU is also a region with very strict requirements on quality standards, traceability and is especially interested in high-end segments such as white pepper and organic pepper.
