Experts say that domestic pepper prices are recovering strongly after a period of stagnation due to concerns that the US will impose high reciprocal tariffs on Vietnamese goods, including pepper.
The tax deferral not only helps ease the waiting mentality but also allows businesses to import goods before the risk of increased costs returns after the extension period. This has contributed to creating momentum for pepper prices to recover quickly in recent days.
In the country, many farmers did not sell pepper immediately after harvesting but kept it because they had previously made good profits from durian and coffee. The stockpiling of goods after the harvest has caused a shortage of raw pepper supply in the market. In addition, information that this year's pepper output is lower than last year's also contributed to the price increase, with the expectation that it will soon reach 160,000 VND/kg.

According to the Vietnam Pepper and Spices Association (VPSA), in 2024, Vietnam's pepper exports to the US reached 72,311 tons, recording a record increase of 33.2%; the total turnover reached 409 million USD, equivalent to 31% of Vietnam's total pepper export turnover to all markets. However, the Donald Trump administration's application of a 10% import tax on all goods imported into the US has created great concern for Vietnamese pepper exporting enterprises.
In the first months of 2025, many Vietnamese pepper enterprises signed many long-term orders with US importers, including orders with delivery dates until August and September this year. Previously, pepper exports to the US were almost tax-free, but currently, many shipments are being transported to the US; these shipments were signed for prices before there was information about the imposition of taxes.
