On April 13, the pepper price in bulk in the Central Highlands was listed at 156,000 VND/kg, an increase of 1,000 VND/kg compared to one or two days ago, but many farmers said they would actually receive more money.
The owner of a farm in Binh Phuoc that grows organic pepper said they will be paid an additional VND20,000/kg compared to the market price by the unit. Producing pepper according to organic standards helps the farm have a stable income and always make a profit, even when pepper prices are low.
Mr. Nguyen Phi Hung, a farmer in Dak Song district (Dak Nong province), boasted that his pepper always sells for 7,000 - 8,000 VND/kg higher than the market price thanks to picking ripe, large fruits and drying them thoroughly.
"Pepper is very susceptible to mold, so it must be dried thoroughly. If it is not sold yet, it can be stored in a warehouse without worrying about it spoiling," Mr. Hung explained.

Regarding cultivation, Mr. Hung said that when pepper cost more than 200,000 VND/kg in 2015-2016, farmers took excessive care of the pepper gardens, making them weak and susceptible to disease. When the disease struck, the entire garden could die.
Previously, pepper gardens could yield 5-6 tons/ha, but now farmers do not take much care of them, yielding only 3-4 tons/ha but using less fertilizer and pesticides - the pepper gardens are healthier and more economically efficient.
Drying pepper thoroughly before storing helps preserve pepper for a long time and sell it for a good price.
"Farmers no longer clean the grass, leaving only pepper as before, but let the grass grow, both to preserve soil and water, and when there are pests, they are dispersed, not concentrated to harm the pepper plants" - Mr. Hung shared the secret.
According to the Vietnam Pepper and Spice Association, Dak Nong is currently one of the six main pepper growing provinces in Vietnam, along with Dak Lak, Gia Lai, Dong Nai, Ba Ria - Vung Tau and Binh Phuoc, with an area of 33,500 hectares, accounting for about 30% of the country. In terms of output, this growing area is expected to harvest 81,000 tons this year, accounting for nearly 43% of the country's output.
