Iron ore futures on the Dalian Commodity Exchange (DCE) fluctuated as traders weighed India’s steel tariffs and strong Chinese demand. In the domestic market, selling prices remained steady.

Rebar on the Shanghai Futures Exchange (SHFE) for October 2025 delivery fell 3 yuan to 3,089 yuan/t.

Iron ore futures traded in a narrow range, as investors weighed new temporary tariffs on some Chinese steel against bright near-term demand from China.

The most-traded September iron ore contract on China's Dalian Commodity Exchange (DCE) rose 0.21% to 711 yuan ($97.26) a tonne.

Benchmark iron ore for May delivery (SZZFK5) on the Singapore Exchange fell 0.87% to $98.50 a tonne.

Tariff concerns are weighing on steel exports, weighing on the outlook for iron ore demand in the second quarter, brokerage Galaxy Futures said.

Meanwhile, steel output rose 4.6% to 93 million tonnes in March despite government efforts to curb capacity, according to ANZ.

"Strong iron ore buying by steel mills and lower imports have led to a sharp decline in inventories," ANZ added.

Total iron ore inventories across ports in China fell 2.39% week on week to 134.6 million tonnes as of April 18, Steelhome data showed.

However, hot metal output fell slightly by 1,000 tonnes from the previous month and steel mill profits fell, according to brokerage Everbright Futures.

Hot metal output is often used to gauge iron ore demand. On the supply side, iron ore shipments from Australia and Brazil edged up 0.1% from the previous week, consultancy Mysteel said in a note.

Other steelmaking components on the DCE lost ground, with coking coal and coke (DCJcv1) down 2.42% and 1.83%, respectively.

Steel benchmarks on the Shanghai Futures Exchange weakened. Rebar fell 0.74%, hot-rolled coil and wire (SWRcv1) both fell about 0.8%, and stainless steel fell 0.63%.
