Steel prices on the exchange
Rebar on the Shanghai Futures Exchange (SHFE) for October 2025 delivery rose 21 yuan to 3,130 yuan/t.
Dalian iron ore futures hit their highest in nearly three weeks, supported by hopes for U.S.-China trade talks and strong seasonal demand for the steelmaking raw material.
The most-traded September iron ore contract on China's Dalian Commodity Exchange (DCE) rose 2.11 percent to 727.5 yuan ($99.73) a tonne. It had earlier hit 731 yuan, its highest since April 3.
Benchmark iron ore for May delivery (SZZFK5) on the Singapore Exchange rose 1.61% to $100.2 a tonne.
Steel output in China continues to rise and downstream demand for construction materials has increased, brokerage Galaxy Futures said in a note.
“Increased mill buying and lower imports have depleted iron ore inventories,” ANZ said.
Inventories of five major carbon steel products held by Chinese steel mills fell 5% in the week to April 17, driven by a strong recovery in domestic steel demand, according to consultancy Mysteel.
However, while China's property indicators are improving, the prospects for a significant recovery look weak, ANZ added.
Also boosting sentiment were hopes of an easing of trade tensions between the US and China.
US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said he believed trade tensions with China would ease, although he described future negotiations as a “fight” that had yet to begin.
US President Donald Trump expressed optimism that he would make progress with China that would significantly reduce their tariffs.
However, on Monday, India imposed a temporary 12% tariff on some imported steel items, known as a safeguard duty, to curb a surge in cheap shipments from China.
Other steelmaking components on the DCE jumped, with coking coal NYMEX:ACT1! and coke (DCJcv1) up 2.56% and 3.14%, respectively.
Steel benchmarks on the Shanghai Futures Exchange rose. Rebar rose 1.46%, hot-rolled coil rose 1.41%, while stainless steel and wire rod (SWRcv1) both rose 0.39%.
