At the end of the trading session on April 21, the price of May rebar futures on the Shanghai Stock Exchange increased by 0.36% (11 yuan) to 3,026 yuan/ton.

Meanwhile, the May iron ore futures price on the Dalian Commodity Exchange edged up 0.6% (4.5 yuan) to 763 yuan/ton, while the ore price on the Singapore Commodity Exchange rose $1.8 to $99.36/ton.

According to Mysteel Consulting, steel production in China is still on an upward trend, increasing the prospect of iron ore demand.

Elsewhere, hot-rolled coil prices in southern Europe fell by €20/t in the first half of the month, to €545/t CIF as of April 11. According to Kallanish, this was due to the presence of unsold imported steel stocks at ports, especially from Vietnam.

European steel mills are concerned that if hot-rolled steel prices continue to rise, imported steel will become more attractive to buyers, despite the tariffs.

The decision to import duty-free hot-rolled steel from Vietnam into the EU exceeded the quota in the first quarter. At that time, the additional duties on Vietnamese producers ranged from 8-10%. It is likely that these duties will increase in the second quarter after the quota mechanism was adjusted by the European Commission in March.

Meanwhile, demand for hot-rolled coil from major consuming sectors showed no signs of recovery. New vehicle registrations in the EU fell 2.6% in January and 3.4% in February, to 831,200 units and 853,670 units, respectively.

However, in March, S&P Global raised its forecast for EU car production in 2025 by 63,000 units. According to analysts, this is due to the European Commission's amendment to the EU CAFE rules, extending the current environmental standards for internal combustion engine cars until 2028.

In the US, hot-rolled steel prices in the first half of April remained unchanged at $975/ton EXW as of April 11. Earlier, there were reports that US steel mills were restrained from raising prices further due to the possibility of a recovery in imports. As a result, steel prices have reached the maximum level that the market can support.

Meanwhile, hot-rolled coil prices in India increased by $22 per tonne in the first half of the month, reaching $592 per tonne FOB as of April 11.

In contrast, in China, hot-rolled coil prices fell to $470 per ton FOB, compared to $480 per ton FOB on March 28. Although public investment and increased steel exports have not helped reduce the surplus of steel products in the market due to overproduction, this has forced steel mills to continue to reduce prices.

China increased its steel product exports by 6.3 percent year-on-year to 27.43 million tons in the first quarter, the highest since 2016, the report said.
