World market
At the end of the weekend trading session, the price of rebar for May delivery on the Shanghai Futures Exchange fell 0.43% (13 yuan) to 3,015 yuan/ton. Meanwhile, the price of iron ore for May delivery on the Dalian Exchange fell 0.9% (7 yuan) to 758.5 yuan/ton, while the price of ore on the Singapore Exchange increased by 1.35 USD to 99.3 USD/ton.
Compared to the end of last week, steel prices on the Shanghai, Dalian and Singapore exchanges changed by -0.9%, +0.7%, +0.3% respectively.
In another development, hot-rolled coil prices in the Northern European region increased by 10 euros/ton in the first half of April, reaching 720 euros/ton EXW (ex-works price) as of April 11.
According to Kallanish’s interviews with representatives of the metal service center, the reason is that the region’s largest producer – ArcelorMittal – has decided to increase its prices by €20/t to €700/t EXW for orders delivered in April.
However, traders believe that €680/t EXW is more realistic as market demand remains weak, so ArcelorMittal’s new offers will force deals back to around €680/t EXW.
In the US, hot-rolled coil prices remained unchanged in the first half of April, remaining at $1,162/mt EXW as of April 11. Mill deliveries remained steady, indicating steady demand – but no upward trend.
In Japan, hot-rolled coil prices remained at $620/ton FOB. The reason is that the largest steel group in Southeast Asia – Baosteel (China) – has decided not to increase prices of flat steel products, including hot-rolled coil for orders delivered in May. Branch companies in other regions also closely follow Baosteel's market strategy.
In India, domestic hot-rolled coil prices increased by $12 per tonne to $677 per tonne (DDP) from April 1-11.
The price hike will start from the new fiscal year (April 1). It was earlier reported that the Indian government is considering measures to protect small and medium-sized enterprises using domestic steel from the impact of rising domestic prices, especially in the event of a safeguard duty on imported steel.
