Steel prices opened the week on April 14 with a sideways trend on major exchanges, as investor sentiment remained cautious.

On the Shanghai Futures Exchange, rebar prices for May delivery were steady at around 3,045 yuan per tonne. Meanwhile, iron ore futures for May delivery on the Dalian Commodity Exchange edged up 3 yuan to 758 yuan per tonne. Iron ore prices on the Singapore Commodity Exchange also remained unchanged at $97.12 per tonne.

The trade war between the US and China continues to be a source of uncertainty. If tensions continue to escalate, consumers and businesses in both countries will face higher costs and global supply chains will be severely disrupted.

In another development, JFE Steel – Japan’s second-largest steelmaker – has just announced a plan to invest 329.4 billion yen (equivalent to 2.26 billion USD) to build a large-scale electric arc furnace at its Kurashiki facility, part of the West Japan Works complex.

The project is supported by the Japanese government through a subsidy of up to 104.5 billion yen, aiming to accelerate the transition to green technology. The new electric arc furnace will apply a series of technologies developed and patented by JFE, including advanced metallurgical solutions, aiming to use hydrogen as an alternative to traditional decarbonization agents.

The new plant is expected to have a capacity of about 2 million tons of steel per year and will be operational between April and June 2028. In parallel with the project, JFE will also upgrade infrastructure systems, including ports.

This is part of JFE’s long-term strategy to reduce carbon emissions. Since 2021, the group has set a goal of developing environmentally friendly technologies by 2050, contributing to global efforts for sustainable development.
