Steel prices today, April 1, 2025, on the international market continued to be under downward pressure, reflecting concerns about demand in China - the world's leading steel consuming country. On the Shanghai Futures Exchange (SHFE), rebar for delivery in October 2025 fell 15 yuan to 3,231 yuan/ton, while on the Dalian Commodity Exchange (DCE), iron ore for delivery in May fell 1.47% to 773 yuan/ton (equivalent to 106.59 USD/ton). This decline mainly resulted from Chinese steelmakers voluntarily cutting production, in anticipation of Beijing's production restriction plan to address overcapacity.

This has led to a significant drop in demand for iron ore. In addition, other steelmaking raw materials such as coking coal and coke DCJcv1 on the DCE also plummeted, losing 3.42% and 2.19% respectively. On the SHFE, most steel grades fell: rebar fell 1.03%, hot-rolled coil and wire rod both fell 0.79%, and stainless steel fell 0.85%. The mounting pressure from the global trade war, especially the new US tariffs, has further dimmed the demand outlook, leaving the international steel market in a gloomy state. This situation suggests that steel and related raw material prices may continue to be under pressure in the short term if there is no strong stimulus from China or other major markets.

Steel price situation assessment on April 1, 2025

The steel price situation today, April 1, 2025, in both the domestic and international markets shows two distinct opposite trends: stability in Vietnam and a downward trend on international exchanges. In Vietnam, steel prices in all three regions of the North, Central and South remain stable, with no significant increases or decreases recorded. Specifically, in the North, steel prices range from 13,330 - 13,740 VND/kg, with brands such as Hoa Phat, Viet Y, Viet Duc, Viet Sing and VAS maintaining competitive prices but unchanged. The Central region has slightly higher prices, from 13,530 - 14,140 VND/kg, in which Viet Duc steel leads with 14,140 VND/kg for D10 CB300 ribbed steel bars. The South recorded steel prices ranging from VND13,380 to VND13,840 per kg, with Hoa Phat at the highest and VAS at the lowest, reflecting the balance of supply and demand in the region. This stability may stem from domestic construction demand remaining at a moderate level, along with abundant steel supply from major manufacturers.

In contrast, steel prices are under strong downward pressure in the international market, especially in China - the world's largest steel consuming center. On the Shanghai Futures Exchange (SHFE), rebar for October 2025 delivery fell 15 yuan to 3,231 yuan/ton, while iron ore on the Dalian Commodity Exchange (DCE) fell 1.47% to 773 yuan/ton. Other steel products such as hot-rolled coil, wire rod and stainless steel on the SHFE also fell from 0.79% to 1.03%, while coke and coke DCJcv1 on the DCE lost 3.42% and 2.19%, respectively. The main reason is that Chinese steelmakers are cutting production to prepare for Beijing's capacity restriction policy to address overcapacity. In addition, concerns about global demand rising due to the trade war, especially from new US tariffs, further exacerbated the downward trend.

Overall, while the domestic market in Vietnam remains stable thanks to the balance of supply and demand, the international market is facing downward pressure on prices due to macroeconomic factors and production policies. This contrast may create opportunities for Vietnam to increase steel exports if it can take advantage of the price difference, but at the same time, it also poses challenges if international demand continues to weaken, indirectly affecting domestic producers in the long term.
