News on durian price situation today April 23, 2025
One of the main reasons for the sharp drop in durian prices this year is that China – Vietnam’s largest consumer market – has tightened import procedures.
Specifically, China requires 100% inspection of imported durian shipments instead of just random inspections as before. In addition, they also increased inspections of banned substances such as Cadmium and Yellow O - two substances that pose a risk of causing cancer if the residue exceeds the permitted threshold.
The lengthy inspection process has led to inventory at the border gate, causing losses for businesses. Many batches of durian that met inspection standards were cracked and damaged when they arrived at the Chinese wholesale market due to the long wait, increasing export risks.
Faced with increasing risks, agricultural experts recommend that farmers and businesses do not use fertilizers and pesticides of unknown origin, proactively test for Cadmium and Yellow O residues before harvesting, and ensure that growing area codes and packaging facilities comply with regulations.
The Plant Protection Department has directed local branches to strengthen supervision and handle cases of poor quality. Orchards that do not meet standards may have their export codes suspended, directly affecting the durian industry value chain.
Although domestic consumption is still good, durian prices this year are forecast to be difficult to increase sharply if barriers from the Chinese market are not removed.
According to large businesses, if customs clearance procedures are not improved from now until mid-May, durian prices will remain low, putting great pressure on growers' income.
