Asked about the possibility of a 20-25% increase in retail prices in the coming months, Illy told Bloomberg TV that “it is possible.” He also said that these high prices are affecting major markets and affecting consumption growth in emerging economies.
Illy also warned that the spike in coffee prices could lead consumers to cut back on consumption. He attributed the volatility to a lack of information about future supplies and short-term speculation.

World pepper market developments
According to the update from the International Pepper Community (IPC) at 4:30 a.m. on February 9, 2025, the global pepper market remains high. After the previous downward adjustment, pepper prices in Indonesia have stabilized again. Pepper prices in other countries are also high and have not fluctuated significantly.
Specifically, the price of Lampung black pepper (Indonesia) is currently at 7,276 USD/ton, while the price of Muntok white pepper is at 9,770 USD/ton.
In Malaysia, pepper prices continued to remain high, with ASTA black pepper being purchased at $9,000/ton, while ASTA white pepper was priced at $11,600/ton.
Pepper prices in Brazil remain quite high, currently fluctuating at 6,500 USD/ton.
The export market for Vietnamese pepper continues to have a positive trend. Specifically, the export price of Vietnamese black pepper 500 g/l is currently at 6,500 USD/ton, 550 g/l is at 6,650 USD/ton, while white pepper is priced at 9,550 USD/ton.
Pepper harvest situation in the Central Highlands
Currently, farmers in the Central Highlands provinces have begun the pepper harvest with optimism as prices show many positive signs, higher than the same period last year. Although unfavorable weather has reduced output and pepper has not ripened evenly, high prices have helped farmers hope for a successful crop.
According to a report from Ptexim, Vietnam's total pepper export volume in 2024 will reach 250,600 tons, indicating abundant supply. However, domestic pepper output has been continuously decreasing in the past 3-4 years due to the shrinking cultivation area. The reason is that many farmers have switched to more profitable crops such as coffee and durian.
Experts say that global pepper supply may not be able to meet rising demand, leading to the possibility of pepper prices continuing to increase sharply in 2025. This is considered a great opportunity for the Vietnamese pepper industry in the coming time.
