By the end of September, Vietnam had imported about 139,000 tons of coffee, reaching a turnover of nearly 527 million USD, up 36% in volume and 76% in value compared to the same period last year. This reflects the limited domestic supply, causing businesses to increase imports of raw coffee.

Vietnam’s coffee imports increased towards the end of the season. In September alone, the country imported 14,400 tons of coffee, worth nearly $65 million, up 54% in volume and 132% in value over the same period last year.

Despite purchasing coffee at an average price lower than the export price, Vietnamese businesses still prioritize importing cheap raw materials to serve the production of instant coffee and processed coffee. The main supplies come from countries such as Laos, Indonesia, Brazil, Colombia, Ethiopia and Peru.

Domestic coffee prices are currently fluctuating between VND109,400 and VND110,000 per kilogram and may fall further in the coming days due to abundant global supply. The shortage of domestic supply has forced Vietnam to increase imports to meet production needs.

Pepper prices continued to fall this week due to the shift of cash flow to coffee. Coffee is at the beginning of the season and prices have doubled compared to last year, requiring large capital from traders and agents. Some people chose to sell off their pepper inventory to consolidate goods, while demand has not improved, causing pepper prices to fall.

Market experts predict that the downward trend in pepper prices will continue this week. However, the rain and flood circulation after storm Tra Mi may affect pepper gardens, raising concerns about the impact on next year's crop output.

Thanh Nien newspaper reported that in Gia Lai, many farmers have begun to consider replanting pepper trees as prices tend to increase again. However, with memories of previous difficulties, they are currently only planting sparingly or replanting on old pepper poles interspersed in coffee gardens.

Mr. Hoang Phuoc Binh, Permanent Vice President of Chu Se Pepper Association, said that the increase in pepper price is an opportunity to redevelop this valuable crop in the coming time.
