After a series of consecutive increases, the domestic agricultural market on the morning of April 19 witnessed negative developments when both coffee and pepper prices reversed and fell sharply. Coffee prices dropped from 3,200 - 4,100 VND/kg compared to yesterday, while pepper lost 2,000 - 3,000 VND/kg.

Coffee prices plummet

On the London floor, at 5:00 a.m. on April 19, Robusta coffee prices recorded a stable trend, slowing down after the previous sharp decline, fluctuating from 5,098 to 5,398 USD/ton. Specific trading terms are as follows: May 2025 at 5,253 USD/ton, July at 5,277 USD/ton, September at 5,211 USD/ton and November at 5,142 USD/ton.

Similar developments were recorded on the New York floor for Arabica coffee, when prices were flat and little changed, in the range of 353.50 - 380.90 cents/lb. The contract price for delivery in May 2025 was at 375.50 cents/lb, July was 372.60 cents/lb, September reached 366.05 cents/lb and December was stable at 358.70 cents/lb.

As for Brazilian Arabica coffee, the closing price of the trading session showed a decreasing trend according to the terms, ranging from 445.45 - 475.50 USD/ton. Specifically, the price for delivery in May 2025 was 475.50 USD/ton, in July it reached 468.45 USD/ton, in September it was 451.55 USD/ton and in December it decreased to 443.75 USD/ton.

Domestic coffee prices drop by thousands of dong

Recorded at 5am this morning, coffee prices in the Central Highlands provinces suddenly turned down sharply compared to yesterday, with a drop of 3,200 to 4,100 VND/kg. Currently, the average purchase price fluctuates around 129,600 VND/kg.

Each locality recorded as follows: Dak Lak and Dak Nong both maintained the price at 129,700 VND/kg, Gia Lai reached 129,500 VND/kg and Lam Dong had the lowest price at 129,000 VND/kg.

Despite the short-term downward adjustment, the Vietnamese coffee industry still had an impressive first quarter of 2025 in terms of exports. According to the Customs Department, export turnover reached 2.8 billion USD, up nearly 46% over the same period last year, surpassing seafood (2.3 billion USD) and ranking only behind wood in the agricultural, forestry and fishery group.

In early April, when the US announced its tax plan, domestic coffee prices fell sharply from VND132,000/kg to VND118,000/kg. International export prices also plummeted, with Robusta losing $1,251/ton and Arabica dropping to $2,356/ton.

However, after April 10, the news that the US would suspend the imposition of tariffs for 90 days helped the market recover quickly. Coffee prices in the Central Highlands provinces rebounded to VND132,000/kg, while on international trading floors, export coffee prices also approached previous peaks.

Pepper prices fell sharply

In the domestic market, pepper prices also fell sharply on the morning of April 19, with a common decrease of 2,000 to 3,000 VND/kg. The average purchase price is currently at 155,400 VND/kg in key areas.

Specifically, in Gia Lai, pepper decreased by VND2,000 to VND155,000/kg. In Ba Ria - Vung Tau and Binh Phuoc, the price also fell to VND155,000/kg after losing another VND2,000.

Meanwhile, Dak Lak and Dak Nong recorded the sharpest decrease of up to 3,000 VND/kg, currently pepper price in these two provinces reached 156,000 VND/kg.

World pepper market sideways

According to an update from the International Pepper Community (IPC), world pepper prices on the morning of April 19 continued to remain stable after many alternating sessions of increase and decrease.

Specifically, Lampung black pepper (Indonesia) remained at 7,056 USD/ton, Muntok white pepper reached 9,641 USD/ton. In Malaysia, ASTA black pepper price remained at 9,600 USD/ton, ASTA white pepper reached 12,100 USD/ton. In Brazil, pepper price remained stable at 6,900 USD/ton.

Vietnam's pepper exports remained unchanged from the previous session. The price of 500g/l black pepper was at $6,800/ton, 550g/l at $6,900/ton, while white pepper remained at $9,800/ton.

Recovery trend still exists, but risks from US policy weigh heavily

Domestic pepper prices are assessed to still have room to recover thanks to strong demand, especially after concerns about US tax policies subsided. The Vietnam Pepper and Spice Association (VPSA) recorded positive signals from major markets such as the US, Europe, Asia - especially China.

However, the US imposing a 10% tax if negotiations fail will be a major concern. VPSA Chairwoman Hoang Thi Lien warned that if the situation does not improve, Vietnam could lose market share to countries like Indonesia and Brazil. In this context, businesses are advised to expand to potential markets like Europe.

The EU is currently recovering strongly with total pepper imports in 2024 reaching more than 120,000 tons, up 20% compared to 2023. Vietnam continues to play a leading role with 52.1% market share. However, strict quality requirements and priority for high-end segments such as white pepper and organic pepper are also significant challenges for domestic exporters.
