Coffee pops up impressively

At 5:00 a.m. on April 16, 2025, at the London Stock Exchange, Robusta coffee prices continued to increase at the end of the trading session, increasing from 101 to 110 USD/ton, fluctuating between 5,102 and 5,390 USD/ton. Specifically, the futures price for May 2025 reached 5,373 USD/ton; July 2025 was at 5,340 USD/ton; September 2025 closed at 5,272 USD/ton and November 2025 recorded 5,199 USD/ton.

On the New York floor, the price of Arabica coffee in the early morning of April 16 continued to increase compared to the previous session, with an increase of 8.45 - 9 cents/lb, fluctuating in the range of 347.75 - 372.15 cents/lb. The futures prices include: May 2025 at 369.40 cents/lb; July 2025 at 367.15 cents/lb; September 2025 at 361.35 cents/lb and December 2025 at 354.05 cents/lb.

In Brazil, Arabica coffee prices also increased in the same direction as the London and New York exchanges, recording an increase of 0.95 - 11.45 USD/ton, ranging from 436.15 - 486.95 USD/ton. Details of each term include: May 2025 reached 479.75 USD/ton; July 2025 recorded 461.25 USD/ton; September 2025 was 446.00 USD/ton and December 2025 reached 436.15 USD/ton.

Domestic coffee prices also increased dramatically.

In the domestic market at 5:00 a.m. on April 16, 2025, coffee prices in the Central Highlands increased sharply compared to yesterday, the increase ranged from 5,000 - 5,200 VND/kg. Currently, the average purchase price reached 130,100 VND/kg.

In some localities, today's coffee prices are recorded as follows: Dak Lak and Dak Nong are both at 130,200 VND/kg; Gia Lai reached 130,000 VND/kg; while Lam Dong is lower at 129,300 VND/kg.

The coffee market is witnessing a series of 5 consecutive price increases, starting from the announcement of the temporary suspension of reciprocal tariffs by US President Donald Trump on April 9. From April 10 to April 15, the price of green coffee beans in the Central Highlands jumped by more than 12,000 VND/kg, equivalent to about 10%, to around 129,300 - 130,200 VND/kg, approaching the old peak of 133,000 - 135,000 VND/kg recorded before trade tensions escalated.

The market had previously suffered a sharp decline when the US imposed high tariffs on imports from several countries, including major coffee exporters such as Vietnam, Brazil and Colombia. This policy raised concerns that US consumers would have to bear more costs amid rising global coffee prices due to tight supplies.

However, after Mr. Trump announced a 90-day delay in imposing new tariffs and kept the 10% tariff unchanged, market sentiment quickly improved. Positive reactions from businesses and investors contributed to the rebound in coffee prices on the international market.

In addition to political factors, coffee prices were also supported by the weakness of the USD/DXY index – currently at its lowest level in more than three years – along with Robusta inventories on the London exchange falling sharply to a six-week low.

Pepper maintains strong growth momentum

As of 5:00 a.m. on April 16, 2025, domestic pepper prices continued to climb compared to yesterday, with an increase of about 1,000 - 1,500 VND/kg. Currently, the average purchase price in key provinces is 156,600 VND/kg.

In Gia Lai , pepper price today increased by 1,500 VND/kg, currently at 155,500 VND/kg.

In Ba Ria - Vung Tau area, the price also increased by 1,000 VND/kg, currently being purchased at 156,000 VND/kg.

In Binh Phuoc, pepper prices increased by 1,500 VND/kg compared to yesterday, currently trading at 155,500 VND/kg.

In Dak Nong, pepper prices rebounded after a series of flat days, increasing by 1,500 VND/kg, currently being purchased at 158,000 VND/kg.

Pepper prices in Dak Lak and the world fluctuate slightly

In Dak Lak, pepper prices also increased by 1,000 VND/kg compared to yesterday, currently reaching the highest level in the country at 158,000 VND/kg.

According to the update from the International Pepper Community (IPC) at 5:00 a.m. on April 16, 2025, the global pepper market had a slight change, in which Indonesian pepper prices decreased from 17 - 24 USD/ton; the remaining markets maintained a stable trend compared to previous volatile sessions.

Specifically, IPC announced the price of Indonesian Lampung black pepper at 7,064 USD/ton; the price of Muntok white pepper reached 9,651 USD/ton.

The Malaysian market remained stable, unchanged from yesterday's sharp decline. ASTA black pepper prices reached USD 9,600/ton, while ASTA white pepper reached USD 12,100/ton.

In Brazil, pepper prices remained unchanged at $6,850 per ton.

Vietnam's pepper market has not fluctuated much, the export price of 500 g/l black pepper is at 6,600 USD/ton, 550 g/l is 6,800 USD/ton and white pepper is still at 9,600 USD/ton.

Pepper market recovers strongly after policy changes

In the domestic market, pepper prices are increasing rapidly again after a period of stagnation due to concerns about the possibility that the US will impose a reciprocal tax of up to 46% on goods from Vietnam, including pepper. However, after the US government announced a 90-day suspension of this tax, active trading activities have returned with increased purchasing speed from foreign importers.

The decision to postpone the tax not only helps relieve anxiety but also encourages businesses to import goods before the tax exemption period ends. This is an important factor contributing to the rapid increase in pepper prices in recent days.

In the country, some farmers decided not to sell their crops immediately after harvesting, but to keep them, thanks to the stable profits from coffee and durian. This reduced the supply of pepper in the market, while information about this year's pepper crop's output decreasing compared to last year also increased expectations that pepper prices would soon reach 160,000 VND/kg.

According to the Vietnam Pepper and Spice Association (VPSA), in March 2025, Vietnam imported about 5,000 tons of pepper, with a total value of nearly 29 million USD. Compared to the previous month, import volume increased by nearly 69% and value increased by more than 81%; compared to the same period last year, it increased by more than 32% and 104.9%, respectively.

Not only for domestic consumption, Vietnam also imports pepper from many countries for processing and re-export. Thanks to increasingly advanced processing levels, pepper export output often exceeds domestic output - evidence of improved processing capacity, contributing to increasing the value of the national pepper industry.

However, in the context of increasingly tightening global trade with many tariff barriers, Vietnamese enterprises need to promote supply chain transparency and increase investment in deep processing if they want to maintain long-term advantages in the international market.
