Agricultural product prices on January 16, 2025: Coffee and pepper maintain downward trend

DNVN - On January 16, 2025, coffee prices continued to decrease from 700 to 1,000 VND/kg, ranging from 114,000 - 114,500 VND/kg. Domestic pepper prices also decreased sharply, currently ranging from 145,000 - 146,000 VND/kg in key areas.

Coffee prices continue to decline

Agricultural product prices on January 14, 2025: Coffee drops sharply, pepper is stable

On the London floor, Robusta coffee prices recovered at 5:00 a.m. on January 16, 2025 after falling in the first sessions of the week. Specifically, the delivery price for March 2025 reached 4,912 USD/ton, for May 2025 was 4,856 USD/ton, for July 2025 was 4,780 USD/ton, and for September 2025 was 4,692 USD/ton.

Similarly, Arabica coffee prices in New York also increased on January 16, 2025. The specific prices were March 2025 futures at 330.45 cents/lb, May 2025 at 326.05 cents/lb, July 2025 at 319.40 cents/lb, and September 2025 at 311.05 cents/lb.

In Brazil, Arabica coffee prices increased after two volatile sessions. The March 2025 contract recorded $411.80/ton, May 2025 was $405.50/ton, July 2025 reached $398.10/ton, and September 2025 reached $386.35/ton.

In the Central Highlands, coffee prices decreased by 700 to 1,000 VND/kg, ranging from 114,000 to 114,500 VND/kg. Dak Nong currently has the highest purchase price of 114,500 VND/kg, down 1,000 VND/kg compared to the previous day.

In Dak Lak, the price decreased by 700 VND/kg, currently at 114,500 VND/kg. In Gia Lai, the coffee price decreased by 800 VND/kg, trading at 114,400 VND/kg. Lam Dong recorded the lowest price at 114,000 VND/kg, down 700 VND/kg.

Experts predict that Vietnam’s coffee output will continue to increase in the coming years as farmers invest heavily in crop care. The coffee replanting project of the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development in collaboration with the World Bank has significantly improved productivity and output. New planting areas have increased in the Central Highlands, but there are no specific statistics, making it difficult to forecast total output.

Domestic pepper continues to decrease

At 5:00 a.m. on January 16, 2025, domestic pepper prices continued to decrease, ranging from 145,000 - 146,000 VND/kg, with an average of 145,400 VND/kg. In Gia Lai and Dak Lak, prices remained stable at 145,000 VND/kg.

However, Binh Phuoc and Ba Ria - Vung Tau recorded a decrease of 1,000 VND/kg. The current price in Binh Phuoc is 145,000 VND/kg, while in Ba Ria - Vung Tau it is 146,000 VND/kg. In Dak Nong, pepper prices are stable at 146,000 VND/kg.

According to the International Pepper Community (IPC), the world pepper market did not fluctuate much on January 16, 2025. In Indonesia, the price of Lampung black pepper decreased by 20 USD/ton to 7,142 USD/ton, and the price of Muntok white pepper decreased by 26 USD/ton to 9,231 USD/ton.

Malaysia maintained high prices with ASTA black pepper at USD 8,700/ton and ASTA white pepper at USD 11,100/ton. Brazil continued to keep pepper prices stable at USD 6,350/ton.

Vietnam's pepper exports increased slightly, with the price of 500 g/l black pepper reaching 6,350 USD/ton and 550 g/l at 6,650 USD/ton. The export price of white pepper reached 9,550 USD/ton.

Experts say pepper prices are unlikely to exceed VND150,000/kg before Tet, despite rising demand from the US, EU, Middle East and China. In 2024, domestic pepper prices are expected to increase from VND83,500/kg on January 1, 2024 to VND152,000/kg on December 31, 2024, an increase of 82%.

Pepper inventories among the people have been depleted, remaining only at agents and business warehouses. In the next 3-5 years, global pepper output is forecast to still be difficult to meet demand.
