Domestic coffee prices remain stable at high levels
At 5:00 a.m. this morning, April 4, 2025, the coffee market in the Central Highlands region still maintained high prices with a slight upward trend. The average purchase price is currently 133,500 VND/kg.
Coffee prices in some localities are as follows: Dak Lak remains at 133,500 VND/kg; Lam Dong currently has a price of 132,500 VND/kg; Gia Lai is stable at 133,500 VND/kg; and Dak Nong recorded a price of 133,600 VND/kg.
Coffee exports to increase sharply in early 2025
According to estimates from the Vietnam Coffee and Cocoa Association (Vicofa), in the first quarter of 2025, Vietnam's total coffee export turnover will reach about 2.8 billion USD. If this price does not fluctuate in the next three quarters, the total turnover for the year could reach 8 billion USD - an unprecedented high.
This breakthrough is mainly due to the sharp increase in coffee export prices. Compared to the same period in 2024, the average price increased by 73%, from 3,228 USD/ton to 5,614 USD/ton. For many years, Vietnam's coffee export prices were only around 2,000 USD/ton, but since the beginning of 2024, prices have continuously increased and at times increased very strongly.
In the first half of March 2025, Vietnam's average coffee export price reached 5,798 USD/ton. With this momentum, reaching the 6,000 USD/ton mark in the near future is completely feasible.
In the domestic market, Robusta coffee is currently at a record high. Previously, farmers in the Central Highlands sold it for about VND40 million per ton, but now it has reached about VND134 million per ton, an increase of nearly 3.5 times in two years.
Another factor driving up coffee prices is concerns about new tariffs from the United States. While there are currently no tariffs on coffee from the Americas, U.S. importers are rushing to buy to avoid the risk of future tariffs. According to the National Coffee Association (NCA), “if the U.S. does impose higher tariffs on coffee from Brazil or other North American countries, coffee prices in the U.S. market will increase even more sharply.”
Pepper prices remain stable
As of 5:00 a.m. on April 4, 2025, the domestic pepper market remained stable, almost unchanged from the previous trading session. The average pepper price in key areas remained at VND 157,400/kg.
In Gia Lai, pepper price remains unchanged at 157,000 VND/kg as yesterday. Similarly, the purchasing price in Ba Ria - Vung Tau is also maintained at 157,000 VND/kg.
Pepper prices in Binh Phuoc have not changed, still being purchased at 157,000 VND/kg as in the previous session.
In provinces such as Dak Lak and Dak Nong, pepper prices remain stable at high levels, currently purchased here at 158,000 VND/kg.
International pepper market maintains sideways trend
According to an update from the International Pepper Community (IPC) at 5:00 a.m. on April 4, 2025, world pepper prices are currently moving sideways and remaining high compared to the previous trading session.
Specifically, Indonesian Lampung black pepper is priced at 7,239 USD/ton, while Muntok white pepper is currently traded at 10,066 USD/ton.
The Malaysian market has not recorded any new fluctuations, with ASTA black pepper prices currently at 9,900 USD/ton and ASTA white pepper remaining at 12,400 USD/ton.
Brazil prices are currently stable after a slight decrease in the previous session, with black pepper prices reaching 7,000 USD/ton.
Vietnam’s pepper exports also remained unchanged, remaining at a high level. Specifically, black pepper of 500 g/l was offered at $7,100/ton; 550 g/l was priced at $7,300/ton; while white pepper was traded at $10,100/ton.
Domestic pepper production faces difficulties due to weather
In Gia Lai, farmers are entering the 2024-2025 pepper harvest. Although pepper prices remain high, productivity has decreased sharply due to the impact of the weather, especially the prolonged cold spell during the flowering stage, causing output to decrease by 20% to 30% compared to last year.
Gia Lai province currently has over 7,500 hectares of pepper, mainly in Dak Doa, Chu Se, Chu Puh and Chu Prong districts. Vinh Linh variety accounts for 90% of the total area, the rest are Phu Quoc and Loc Ninh varieties. The area currently being harvested is 6,157 hectares, with an average yield of 3.5 tons of dry weight/ha, and an estimated output of 21,670 tons per year.
The province is promoting the water-saving irrigation model for more than 2,680 hectares and has 383 hectares of cultivation according to standards such as VietGAP, Organic and Rainforest. In the area, there are also 5 purchasing facilities and 9 processing and preliminary processing units with a total capacity of about 7,000 tons/year, ensuring domestic consumption and export demand.
Pepper harvest progress in localities
In the Central Highlands and the Southeast, the harvest is progressing rapidly. Dak Nong has completed about 70% of the area, Dak Lak 40%, Lam Dong about 60%. In Gia Lai, Binh Phuoc, Dong Nai and Ba Ria - Vung Tau provinces, the harvest progress has also reached an average of 50%.
In Quang Tri, people in Cam Lo and Vinh Linh districts are facing the risk of crop failure due to widespread flower loss. The agricultural sector has identified the main cause as the prolonged cold spell, which has resulted in low flower set rates, with many pepper gardens reporting flower loss rates of up to 70-80%. Authorities recommend that growers take proper care and promptly control pests to limit damage.
The decline in output also occurred in many provinces such as Dong Nai, Gia Lai, Dak Lak and Ba Ria - Vung Tau. However, thanks to the pepper price increasing by more than 10,000 VND/kg compared to the beginning of the season, people are still optimistic.
In addition, this year's harvest is later, while many farmers tend to hold on to their products due to more stable finances and not sell them in bulk. This helps growers be more proactive in balancing the market, contributing to stabilizing supply and prices.
