Meanwhile, in the world market, Vietnam's rice export prices fell for the second consecutive week due to weak demand. Indian rice prices remained at their lowest level in nearly two years, indicating that competitive pressure remains high.
In the export market, Vietnam’s 5% broken rice is currently offered at $396 per ton, down slightly from $399 per ton last week. According to a trader in Ho Chi Minh City, transactions are slowing down as buyers are mainly taking delivery of pre-signed contracts. In addition, domestic supply is decreasing while the harvest only begins around June or July, making future rice prices difficult to predict.
Meanwhile, Thailand’s benchmark 5% broken rice rose to $405 a tonne on Thursday from $390 last week, mainly due to exchange rate fluctuations, traders said, as the market remained subdued after the long Songkran holiday in Thailand.
Bangladesh has just allowed the export of 18,150 tonnes of fragrant rice, but the country is struggling to control domestic rice prices, which have increased by 20–25% over the past year.
According to Reuters, rice export prices from India – the world’s largest rice exporter – remained stable around a 22-month low. Meanwhile, Vietnamese rice prices fell slightly due to abundant supply and weak demand, while Thai rice prices increased due to the impact of exchange rates.
Specifically, India's 5% broken parboiled rice is currently offered at $388-$394 per tonne, unchanged from last week. The country's 5% broken white rice is also priced at $378-$383 per tonne.
As of April 1, India's national rice stockpile, including unmilled paddy, stood at 63.09 million tonnes – many times higher than the government's target of 13.6 million tonnes.
