"Sold out" of glue seeds
In early April, visiting the "capital of acacia seeds" Tan Huong commune, Tan Ky district, on both sides of the Ho Chi Minh trail, everywhere you can see bustling scenes of harvesting, packaging, and transporting acacia seeds.

Ms. Nguyen Thi Huyen - a resident in Hamlet 8, Tan Huong Commune happily shared: "Never before has the production and consumption of acacia seedlings been as favorable as this year. My family has more than 3 sao of acacia seedlings production, has harvested more than 20,000 trees and still does not have enough to sell. The price of acacia has increased sharply this year, from 700 VND/tree in 2024, this year up to 1,400 VND/tree, helping us have a much higher income than previous years. It is expected that the whole crop will harvest about 40,000 trees, with revenue reaching more than 56 million VND".

Sharing the joy, Mr. Cao Van Thinh in Tan Minh hamlet is also busy transporting acacia seedlings to customers. "My family produced about 80,000 acacia cuttings this spring, and they have all been sold out so far. The expected revenue is over 100 million VND. On average, I grow 3 batches of acacia each year, each batch lasts 1.5 - 2 months before selling, the spring crop is the time when the largest quantity is produced. If we count all 3 batches, the total income is nearly 200 million VND," said Mr. Thinh.
According to the experience of many acacia growers in Tan Huong commune, to have quality seedlings, the nursery needs to choose fertile, loose soil, and arrange the nursery on a gently sloping ground for good drainage. In addition, installing a roof to adjust the light to suit each stage of the tree's growth is also very important. Before selling, the seedlings need to be classified and carefully cared for to ensure their adaptability when planting forests.
Mr. Le Duc Thuyen - Chairman of Tan Huong Commune People's Committee, said: "Currently, the whole commune has 286 households participating in the production of acacia seedlings, with a total area of up to 30 hectares. Every year, the commune cultivates about 160 million acacia seedlings, supplying not only Nghe An but also neighboring provinces, bringing in revenue of over 65 billion VND. The acacia nursery profession creates stable jobs for thousands of local workers".

Solutions for sustainable career development
Explaining the reason why the price of acacia seedlings has increased but they are still "out of stock", Mr. Le Duc Thuyen said that it is because the demand for planting acacia has increased sharply in recent years when the price of raw wood has stabilized at a high level. Many localities have expanded the area of forest plantation, leading to a large demand for acacia seedlings.
To develop the sustainable acacia nursery industry, Tan Huong commune authorities recommend that people improve the quality of seedlings and diversify products, instead of focusing only on acacia seeds. Increasing the production of high-quality acacia cuttings will help the trees grow better and resist pests and diseases more effectively.

In addition, people should balance the production quantity according to the forest planting season. Spring crop is always the main crop due to favorable weather conditions, while Summer crop often encounters difficulties due to hot weather and few buyers. The lesson learned is that in the Summer crop of 2024, the whole commune has about 120,000 acacia seedlings left over due to slow market consumption.
Not only focusing on acacia trees, many households in Tan Huong commune have begun to expand the production of native forestry trees such as ironwood, lat, cinnamon, black star, and mother of pearl... to diversify products supplied to the market. This is also a sustainable direction to help farmers in Tan Huong commune improve their lives and increase their income.
