The price of live pigs in the Southern region today is around 50,000-54,000 VND/kg.
* The price drop in recent days is believed to be due to the sharp increase in pork supply to the market due to concerns about disease outbreaks during the transitional season, which has caused farmers to increase sales. In addition, the supply of pork from the Central and Southern provinces to the market is also large.
According to the Department of Animal Husbandry (Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development), in October 2023, the price of live pigs decreased nationwide, while the cost of disease prevention increased, the price of animal feed did not decrease significantly, so livestock farms encountered difficulties.
If the epidemic increases and pig prices continue to fall, small-scale farmers will limit investment in herd restoration and even stop raising pigs.
The farm and business sector can still maintain stable livestock farming scale due to the advantages of closed production processes, lower livestock costs, and good disease prevention mechanisms. It is estimated that the total pig herd of the whole country by the end of October 2023 will increase by about 3.4% compared to the same period in 2022.
In October, 55 African swine fever outbreaks occurred in 21 provinces and cities nationwide. The total number of pigs destroyed was 813.
Since the beginning of the year, the country has had 457 outbreaks in 42 provinces and cities; the total number of pigs culled is 17,221. Compared to the same period in 2022, the number of outbreaks decreased by 61.13%, the number of pigs culled at outbreaks decreased by 68.88%. Currently, the country has 115 outbreaks in 62 districts of 24 provinces that have not passed 21 days.
