Soc Trang pig farmers excited because of high profits

Since mid-March 2025, the high price of live pigs has brought joy to farmers in Soc Trang province as profits have increased significantly. Many households said that the price of live pigs this year was 14,000 - 24,000 VND/kg higher than the same period in 2024, bringing in a profit of 2.5 - 4.2 million VND for each 100kg pig.

After more than 30 years of pig farming, Mr. Pham Van Vu, residing in Tan Hoa C hamlet, Long Hung commune, My Tu district, has accumulated a lot of valuable experience. Mr. Vu shared: "To raise pigs profitably, for many years, I have chosen to raise breeding sows and I usually raise 2 breeding sows, the pigs give birth to 2 litters/year (more than 50 pigs/year), the piglets after birth will be sold for breeding after more than 1 month and leave about 10 pigs/litter to raise for meat. In 2025 alone, the batch of live pigs I just sold at the end of March was 8 pigs for meat, the selling price was 74,000 VND/kg, minus the cost of profit was more than 32 million VND. In addition, I also sold 30 wild boars, minus the cost of profit was more than 2 million VND/pig. Currently, I am continuing to take care of the sow herd to prepare for the next litter of pigs this year and plan to keep 10 pigs to raise for meat to sell to the market. Because the current price of live pigs is quite good, the farmers' profits are 30% higher than the same period last year. With the price of live pigs as at the time At present, the profit from selling pork and wild boar is definitely more than 150 million VND/year.

According to Mr. Vu, to optimize costs and improve livestock farming efficiency, while preventing diseases for pigs, building airy and clean barns is essential. In addition, he also uses a mixture of bran and rice bran cooked by himself to feed the pigs, and at the same time takes advantage of green vegetables grown around the garden to supplement nutrients. On hot days, he adds vitamins B1, B6, B12 and C to increase the resistance of the pigs.

With more than 20 years of experience in pig farming, Mr. Son Tong, residing in An Ninh commune, Chau Thanh district, has persisted in maintaining his pig herd despite many difficulties. Mr. Tong said: "I usually raise pigs 3 times a year with each time raising 25 pigs. Pigs are raised for 3.5 months before being sold. To sell at a good price, I will divide the raising time to sell pigs right around Tet or Thanh Minh day, at this time the price of pigs is often higher than normal days. For example, on Thanh Minh occasion in 2025, I sold 10 pigs, the selling price was 70,000 VND/kg of live pigs, minus costs, the profit was 4 million VND/pig".

Currently, Soc Trang province recorded a total herd of pigs (excluding piglets that have not been weaned) of 191,685, an increase of nearly 3%, equivalent to 5,257 pigs compared to the same period last year. The current price of live pigs fluctuates between 70,000 - 80,000 VND/kg. However, the number of pigs ready for sale is still limited, so many farmers have decided to increase their herds in the context that African swine fever has been controlled and has not recurred in many localities.

According to Mr. Dao Van Bay - Deputy Head of the Department of Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Medicine of Soc Trang province, the high price of live pigs has helped farmers have a better income. He also emphasized that in order for herd restoration to take place safely in conditions where the epidemic is still latent, farmers need to fully vaccinate against African swine fever and strictly comply with biosecurity measures such as: regular disinfection of barns; control and disinfection of vehicles entering and exiting the livestock area; and use disinfectants for all equipment and tools in the pig farm.
