* In 2023, the world pig farming industry will face many challenges. The rate of pig herd reduction is taking place in many countries; pork prices have continuously decreased since the beginning of July 2023 due to slow import demand in Asian countries, while supply in some exporters is abundant.

In China, hog prices have fallen due to ample supplies while demand remains low despite the approaching holidays. The country’s pig producers have barely made a profit this year, with supplies significantly higher than a year ago while demand remains sluggish.

Abundant pork supplies and low consumption due to the slowing economy have put pressure on the pork market despite peak demand during the winter season. China’s pork imports have been on a downward trend in recent months due to weak demand.

According to data from the China Customs Administration, in the first 11 months of 2023, China imported 1.45 million tons of pork (HS 0203), worth 3.3 billion USD, down 6.1% in volume and 1.2% in value compared to the same period in 2022.
