In the Northern and Central regions, the price of live pigs on April 4, 2025 recorded a slight increase in many localities. In contrast, the Southern market showed signs of slowing down, with transaction prices remaining in the range of 66,000 - 75,000 VND/kg.

Pig price developments in the North

On the morning of April 4, the Northern region saw a clear recovery as pork prices increased across many localities. The common adjustment ranged from 1,000 - 2,000 VND/kg, pushing the price up to 66,000 - 68,000 VND/kg.

Some places such as Bac Giang, Hung Yen, Phu Tho, Vinh Phuc, Nam Dinh, Ha Nam, Ninh Binh, Nghe An, Thanh Hoa and Ha Tinh recorded an increase of 1,000 VND/kg. Phu Tho alone became the most prominent place with an increase of 2,000 VND/kg, up to 68,000 VND/kg.

Hanoi and Thai Binh are the two leading places in the Northern region with prices of 68,000 VND/kg, showing a clear recovery after a prolonged price decline since the end of March.

Pig price situation in the Central Highlands

The Central and Central Highlands regions have also begun to show positive signs with live hog prices rising again after many days of gloomy trading. The selling price currently ranges from 67,000 to 69,000 VND/kg, an increase of 1,000 VND/kg in many provinces.

Provinces such as Quang Tri, Quang Binh, Thua Thien Hue, Binh Dinh and Khanh Hoa all witnessed price increases, mainly at 67,000 - 68,000 VND/kg. Notably, Binh Dinh and Quang Tri returned to the threshold of 68,000 VND/kg, while the remaining places fluctuated around 67,000 VND/kg.

Lam Dong and Dak Lak alone have not recorded any price fluctuations, currently remaining stable at around 69,000 - 70,000 VND/kg. The overall market in the region is gradually stabilizing again.

Pig price in the South

The Southern market continues to maintain its leading position nationwide with prices fluctuating between 71,000 - 75,000 VND/kg. However, some localities have shown signs of a slight decrease of 1,000 VND/kg compared to yesterday.

Ho Chi Minh City, Dong Nai, Long An, Dong Thap and Ben Tre have now adjusted down to VND71,000/kg. This is the second reduction in three days, reflecting the increasing supply at pig farms ready for slaughter.

Meanwhile, Ca Mau still holds the highest price in the region at 75,000 VND/kg, followed by Hau Giang and Can Tho both reaching 73,000 VND/kg, while Vinh Long stands at 72,000 VND/kg, no change compared to yesterday.

According to the business community, the price of live pigs in the domestic market is likely to remain stable or increase slightly in the next few days, especially in the northern and central provinces. After a period of continuous decline, market sentiment has become more stable.

However, the possibility of a sharp increase in the short term is still not high because the demand for fresh meat after Tet has not clearly recovered. In addition, increased production costs, disease risks and uneven vaccination rates have also prevented farmers from boldly restocking.

Within the framework of the Conference on Disease Prevention and Development of Pig Farming held on the morning of April 3 organized by the Ministry of Agriculture and Environment, Mr. Le Thanh Hoa, Deputy Director of the Department of Quality, Processing and Market Development, Ministry of Agriculture and Environment shared that: "Vietnam ranks 4th in terms of pork demand."

Statistics show that the average pork consumption per capita in Vietnam in 2024 is estimated at about 37 kg/person, with a compound annual growth rate (CAGC) of 3.8% per year. Total national consumption is about nearly 4 million tons per year.

Mr. Le Thanh Hoa also said: "Although the peak consumption period during Tet has passed, pork prices not only did not decrease but also increased sharply after Tet. By early March, the price of live pigs had increased to 75,000 - 80,000 VND/kg, an increase of 15 - 18% compared to early January."

In March, the highest price recorded in Dong Nai was VND83,000/kg on March 6. This is also the highest price in the past three years.

However, from mid-March onwards, pork prices began to show a slight downward trend. According to the update on March 28, pork prices in all three regions continued to decrease, fluctuating on average at 66,000 - 76,000 VND/kg.

Compared to neighboring countries, pork prices in Vietnam are higher than in China, Thailand and Cambodia, but still significantly lower than in the Philippines.

Specifically, the highest price in Vietnam in March was VND83,000/kg; in China, the average price in the first quarter was VND63,000/kg; in Thailand, the average was VND56,000/kg; while the Philippines had the highest price of VND115,000/kg.

Regarding the reasons for the recent increase in pork prices, Mr. Pham Kim Dang, Deputy Director of the Department of Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Medicine, Ministry of Agriculture and Environment, affirmed: “The recent increase in pork prices in Vietnam is the result of many factors. Accordingly, African swine fever is still one of the biggest challenges for pig farming in Vietnam.”
