Pig price news on April 21, 2025: Market pressure in the Mekong Delta and Dong Nai
The price of live pigs today, April 21, 2025 in Vietnam continues to be under downward pressure, especially in the Mekong Delta and Dong Nai, causing difficulties for farmers due to high feed costs and persistent diseases. The price level fluctuates from 73,000 to 75,000 VND/kg, with Dong Nai reaching the highest level of 75,000 VND/kg, while many provinces in the Mekong Delta such as An Giang and Binh Phuoc are only at 73,000 VND/kg.
In the Mekong Delta, the total pig herd is about 1.9 million, but down 5% compared to the same period in 2024 due to the impact of African swine fever, with more than 1,300 pigs culled in the first quarter of 2025. The livestock industry here accounts for 61% of agricultural value, but people face increasing feed costs and difficulties in managing the total herd. Mr. Nguyen Van Tam, an agricultural expert, commented: "Today's live pig price reflects unstable supply, requiring improved management and traceability."
Dong Nai, a major livestock center, is also under similar pressure, although the price of live pigs today reached VND75,000/kg. However, high feed costs and the need to relocate farms away from residential areas have increased production costs. Many livestock farmers here have reduced their scale due to prolonged losses, causing local supply to stagnate.
In contrast to the downward trend in the above areas, Binh Thuan recorded a total pig herd increase of 5.68% over the same period, reaching 408,000 heads by the end of March 2025. The price of live pigs in Binh Thuan reached 74,000 VND/kg, stable thanks to effective disease management and the motivation to restore the herd after Tet.
To address the difficulties, the agricultural sector has proposed to increase traceability, apply online livestock declarations, and use herd management software. These solutions aim to ensure a transparent supply chain and minimize disease risks. Experts predict that today's live hog prices may continue to be under short-term pressure, but improved management and stable supply will help the market gradually recover in the second quarter of 2025.
