Recorded on Oilprice.com at 08:40 on April 22, 2025 (Vietnam time), world natural gas prices increased sharply by 1.53% (equivalent to an increase of 0.046 USD) to 3,062 USD/mmBTU at the time of survey.
It’s no secret that energy is the first commodity group to be affected by the US-China trade war. Exports of propane, a key ingredient in petrochemical production, have hit record highs thanks to soaring demand from Asia, especially China. In 2024 alone, US propane exports to China are expected to increase by 40%.
But the tariff tensions have spilled over into this group of products. China recently added propylene, a petrochemical product derived from propane, to its retaliatory tariff list, causing propane prices in the US to fall by 15%. Freight rates have also plummeted.
It is worth noting that unlike LNG or crude oil, propane is almost irreplaceable in the US-China trade relationship. China currently owns a large petrochemical capacity, accelerating the transition from fuel to fine chemicals, while the US does not have many alternative markets outside of China.
China is now the second-largest importer of propane and imports nearly half of all US ethane exports globally. While Canada has emerged as a potential alternative source, reshaping trade flows will not be easy in the short term.
At home, American consumers may benefit from shrinking export markets, and a surplus of propane will drive down heating prices. But in the long run, it is a reminder of how deeply intertwined energy trade is with global industrial strategy.
