Despite rising goat prices, people remain hesitant to restock their herds.

BPO - After a long period of stagnant prices, from the end of 2024 until now, goat prices have begun to recover and increase again, bringing great joy to breeders. However, a paradox is occurring: despite high and stable prices, many households in Bu Dop district are still not enthusiastic about restocking their herds, mainly due to a lack of natural food sources.

For many years, Mr. Vo Anh Sang's family in Tan Nhan hamlet, Tan Tien commune, has been involved in a staggered goat fattening model, maintaining a stable herd of 60-70 goats. Every 2-3 months, he sells 25-30 goats. While the price of goat meat fluctuated around 100,000 VND/kg in 2024, it has increased to 125-130,000 VND/kg since the beginning of 2025. After deducting expenses, the profit is approximately 1 million VND per goat.

"The price of goat meat has been stable since the beginning of the year. Raising 100 goats can yield a profit of about 100 million VND per batch. But to be profitable and efficient, you need to raise a large number," Mr. Sang shared.

With a stable goat herd size of 60-70 animals and current rising prices, Mr. Vo Anh Sang in Tan Tien commune, Bu Dop district, earns tens of millions of dong in profit each month.

Similarly, Ms. Bui Thi Ha Tuyen in Tan Phuoc hamlet, Tan Tien commune, raises 15 breeding goats. Although the number is not large, it brings her family an income of 50-60 million VND per year. Currently, male breeding goats weighing 12-15kg are priced at 190-200 thousand VND/kg, while female goats are cheaper, around 130 thousand VND/kg. By utilizing grass and leaves as feed sources, this model is suitable for household scale.

Ms. Tuyen said, "Every year, when the price of goat meat is around 100,000 VND/kg, my family earns about 50-60 million VND. Since the beginning of this year, the price of goat meat has increased quite a bit. If it remains stable as it is now, my family could earn 100 million VND this year."

Currently, male breeding goats weighing 12-15kg each are priced at 190-200 thousand VND/kg, bringing in a considerable income for Mrs. Tuyen's family.

The rebound in prices is a positive sign, but in reality, many farms remain empty, and farmers have not shown any clear signs of restocking. The main reason is the increasing scarcity of natural food sources for goats. In particular, the goat fattening model requires a large amount of feed, while the area planted with pepper vines, which provide feed for goats, is sharply decreasing. This makes farmers hesitant to invest in restocking, even though they know the profit opportunities are clear.

Mr. Nguyen Duy Hong from Tan Nghia hamlet, Tan Tien commune, shared: "The price of goats has increased, but people are not yet confident enough to raise them again. Mainly because feed sources like acacia trees and grass are becoming increasingly scarce. Many households who want to invest are forced to give up because there is no stable food source for the goats."

The stable and high price of goats is a positive sign for goat farming in the area. However, for sustainable development, people need to carefully consider investment costs, especially feed sources, and the ability to care for the animals. Local authorities and the agricultural sector need to provide support by guiding people towards areas for growing grass or models for utilizing agricultural by-products so that people can confidently invest in goat farming in the future.
