In Gia Nghia City and neighboring areas, many farmers have reaped sweet fruits from passion fruit. This crop once had a period of miserable price drops.
Ms. Nguyen Minh Thuong, in Nghia Tan Ward, Gia Nghia City, has been growing passion fruit for 15 years and shared: “I grow 1.4 hectares of passion fruit, Chi May variety. In years when prices are low, I still maintain the passion fruit garden to anticipate when the market prices increase.”

According to Ms. Thuong, at this time last year, the selling price of a bucket of passion fruit was only about 5,000 - 11,000 VND/kg, but now it has skyrocketed to 23,000 - 34,000 VND/kg.
Even if carefully selected for export to Europe, the price of passion fruit can reach 45,000 - 60,000 VND/kg, sometimes reaching a record high of 80,000 VND/kg. In less than 3 months, Ms. Thuong has recovered her investment capital and earned more than 100 million VND from her passion fruit garden.
Next to Ms. Thuong's garden, Mr. Nguyen Duy Phong also harvested more than 2 hectares of passion fruit. His family has been harvesting passion fruit continuously for 3 months.
On average, he harvests 3-5 tons of fresh passion fruit each week. His passion fruit garden has an average yield of about 60 tons/ha. After Tet, Mr. Phong's passion fruit garden has recovered about 600 million VND in investment capital and has a profit of about 200 million VND.

According to Mr. Phong, this year due to the erratic weather, pests and diseases on passion fruit have appeared a lot, and investment costs have increased sharply. "Up to this point, my family has invested more than 600 million VND for more than 2 hectares of passion fruit, about 200 million VND higher than previous years. However, thanks to good prices, profits are still high," Mr. Phong shared.
According to passion fruit growers, thanks to high prices, they have recovered their capital after only 7 months and are now entering a period of strong profitability. Passion fruit will bear fruit after 4-5 months of planting, and if well cared for, can be harvested continuously for 2 years.
Caring for passion fruit requires high techniques, especially in preventing fungi and pests, which requires a lot of effort and expense.

Mr. Nguyen Van Tu in village 9, Nhan Co commune, Dak R'lap district grows 2 hectares of passion fruit. With 20 years of growing passion fruit, Mr. Tu shared that this crop requires trellis and sprinkler irrigation system. People can invest in main pillars made of wood, concrete or secondary pillars made of bamboo to reduce costs.
For families that take good care of their passion fruit trees, the yield can reach 70 – 100 tons/ha/year. However, the average yield of passion fruit usually ranges from 50 – 60 tons.
Some households had lower yields this year due to the cold weather making it difficult for lemons to bear fruit, but since April the hot weather has returned, and the trees have flowered and produced fruit more vigorously.
Anh Tu said: “Passion fruit is a popular fruit all over the world. Passion fruit is widely used in the food and beverage industry, so the output is relatively stable.”

Dak Nong currently has more than 800 hectares of passion fruit, with an output of over 12,000 tons/year. Overall, with the current rising price and favorable output, passion fruit is becoming the "green gold" of many farming families.
Despite the high economic efficiency, the local agricultural sector still recommends that people should not massively expand the area of passion fruit. Because over the years, the price of passion fruit has often fluctuated.
In addition, passion fruit requires large capital and high care techniques. If it grows too quickly, it will lead to a situation where there is a good harvest but low prices, traders will force down prices or it will be difficult to control diseases, leading to huge economic risks and losses.
