Many years ago, the price of areca nuts in Quang Ngai was unstable, at times the price dropped to 5,000 VND/kg. However, in the past 3 months, the price of areca nuts has remained at 55,000 - 65,000 VND/kg, bringing great joy to farmers. Quang Ngai is famous for its large area of areca nuts, mainly concentrated in Son Tay district with about 1,000 hectares, and Nghia Hanh district is also a locality with a large area of areca nuts. Statistics on the area of areca nuts are difficult because many farmers grow them in gardens, intercropping or scattered.
Currently, traders from all over flock to the villages of Quang Ngai to buy fresh areca nuts. Mr. Tran Van Nam, a farmer in Hanh Duc commune, Nghia Hanh district, shared with Lao Dong newspaper reporters that his family grows 400 areca nuts, which are in the main season. Each mature areca tree (planted for 5-6 years) produces an average of 4 areca bunches per year. With the current areca price of 60,000 VND/kg, each areca tree brings farmers about 700,000 VND in profit. This is a high profit that few crops in Quang Ngai can match.
Areca nuts from Quang Ngai are mainly exported to the Chinese market. When demand from this market increases, the price of areca nuts often increases. After purchasing, areca nuts are steamed, dried and resold to traders for export to China, India and other countries.
Son Tay District, with nearly 1,000 hectares of areca plantations, stands out with the title "land of a thousand areca palms." Currently, about 500 hectares of areca palms here are in harvest season. Record high prices of areca palms have forced many garden owners to set up tents in their gardens to sleep overnight to protect their areca palms from being stolen.
Talking to Lao Dong Newspaper reporter, Mr. Pham Hong Khuyen - Head of the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development of Son Tay district said that people are very happy with the sudden increase in areca nut prices. Many areca nut gardens, although the fruits are still young, are still ordered by traders to buy the whole garden. Areca nut in Son Tay district is famous for being grown using clean methods, without using chemical fertilizers or pesticides, so it is very popular with foreign partners. The processing technology of countries importing areca nut from Vietnam is also very advanced, creating many diverse products from areca nut.
