The rubber market remained subdued amid concerns over global economic uncertainty due to trade wars and geopolitical tensions. However, gains in crude oil prices and prospects of economic recovery in China limited the decline in natural rubber prices.
In another perspective, a Chinese data provider said domestic and international producers are entering the rubber tapping season, which lasts until September.
Meanwhile, concerns about a potential economic slowdown fueled by tariff tensions will weigh on rubber prices. The ongoing US-China tariff dispute is dampening demand for rubber-based end products such as cars, home appliances and footwear. However, China’s auto exports rose 16% in the first quarter to 1.54 million units, somewhat alleviating concerns about future rubber demand.
In Malaysia, the Malaysian Rubber Board said the standard rubber price (SMR) 20 fell 15.5 sen to 745 sen per kg, while latex prices fell 5.5 sen to 641 sen per kg. The decline was mainly due to a stronger ringgit and weakness in other markets such as Japan.
