Domestic coffee prices on November 21, 2024

On the morning of November 21, updated at 4:30 a.m., the world and domestic coffee markets were in opposite directions. World coffee prices suddenly increased sharply while domestic coffee prices decreased.

The reason is said to be because the European Parliament has made a final conclusion on the time of application of the Anti-Deforestation Regulation (EUDR) which will be delayed by 12 months according to the EC's proposal in order to give businesses more time to prepare better and for EU authorities to have specific and detailed instructions in implementation.

Currently, coffee growers in Vietnam are happy to start the new harvest season, coffee prices are always high. According to coffee exporters, the 2023-2024 crop year is considered a "successful" year for the Vietnamese coffee industry, when the export output is less than 1.5 million tons but the export turnover reaches over 5 billion USD.

However, concerns that the coffee harvest progress in the domestic market is not guaranteed will affect export activities, and even reduce output due to the inability to ensure the quality of coffee beans. Previously, due to the impact of the prolonged heat wave at the beginning of the year, analysts predicted that Vietnam's coffee output in the 2024-2025 crop could decrease by 10-15% compared to the 2023-2024 crop.

Although coffee prices are high, purchasing is difficult because growers expect prices to increase at the end of the year and do not want to sell early. Many gardeners even buy coffee to store as an investment, causing supply to decrease even though it is the peak harvest season.

According to experts, world coffee prices are affected by many complex factors, including natural and policy factors. In the near future, coffee prices may continue to fluctuate strongly and farmers, businesses and consumers need to be prepared for these changes.

Consulting firm StoneX forecasts that Brazil’s 2024-2025 coffee bean output will fall 0.4% from the current crop, mainly due to a decline in Arabica coffee due to the impact of drought. Accordingly, the country’s next Arabica coffee output could fall by up to 10.5% from the previous crop, to 40 million 60-kg bags.
