Coffee price June 22, Domestic coffee price June 22, 2024 |
USDA forecasts world coffee production for 2023/24 to increase by 4.2%, with arabica production up 10.7% and robusta down 3.3%. Ending stocks for 2023/24 are expected to decline by 4%, while Brazil’s arabica production will increase by 12.8% and Colombia’s by 7.5%.
Vietnam's robusta coffee output for the 2024/2025 crop year (October 2023 to May 2024) is expected to reach only 24 million bags, the lowest level in 13 years.
Drought and pests have severely affected coffee yields, putting pressure on robusta exports. Leading companies in Vietnam report that their inventories will only last until around June 2024, not until the next harvest season.
Ongoing weather problems in major coffee-producing countries Vietnam and Brazil are continuing to push coffee prices higher due to concerns about crop failures and insufficient supply.
The market had earlier rallied to a two-week high on June 20. Coffee prices were supported by continued hot and dry weather in Brazil and Vietnam, which added to concerns about global coffee production for the next crop.
Graded Arabica coffee stocks held on the New York Arabica market were reported to be unchanged as of June 19, recording these stocks at 824,416 bags.
Commodity markets lacked direction from the US on Wednesday, but intraday Robusta coffee still hit highs and the rally continued into Thursday's session yesterday.
Investors are also watching the weather in top producer Brazil, which, while typically dry at this time of year, has been hit by a drought and low temperatures in the country’s winter, raising concerns about future supplies, said Thiago Cazarini, president of Cazarini Trading Co.
Hot, dry weather in Vietnam has also raised concerns about the next harvest in the world’s largest exporter of Robusta coffee, which supplies the type used in instant coffee. Vietnam is expected to see scattered showers in the coming period, indicating that rainfall so far in June has been too little, Maxar reported.
