Vietnamese coffee is increasingly asserting its position in the world market as the value of coffee exports has increased steadily over the years, from 2.7 billion USD in 2020 to 4.2 billion USD in 2023 and promises to reach 5 billion USD this year.

World coffee prices may continue to rise sharply due to reduced output in most leading coffee exporting countries, especially Vietnam.

Vietnam’s coffee growers have been hit hard by the worst drought in nearly a decade this year, raising concerns about higher global coffee prices, Reuters reported, with output forecast to fall 10-16 percent this year.

Vietnam Commodity Exchange (MVX) Deputy Director Nguyen Ngoc Quynh said output is expected to fall by 10-16% due to extreme heat in the Central Highlands coffee region from March to early May.

The return of rain in recent weeks has improved the supply outlook, but it remains uncertain whether this will boost output and lower prices for Robusta, the bean typically used in espresso and instant coffee. Vietnam is the world’s top producer of Robusta beans.

Brazil’s coffee supply has also been hit by heavy rains. In March, Brazil’s Minas Gerais region – which produces 30% of the country’s Arabica coffee – received 235% more rain than the average for the year. Then, in April, there was no rain, and the situation continued into May, damaging the country’s coffee crops.

Additionally, port congestion, shipping delays and geopolitical uncertainty are exacerbating supply concerns and are supporting price increases.

According to the International Coffee Organization (ICO) report, coffee prices witnessed a strong recovery in the second half of May and increased from 195.1 US cents/pound to 220.7 US cents/pound as uncertainty about the supply of the 2024-2025 crop continued to increase.

Coffee prices were also supported by the strengthening of the US dollar against the Brazilian real (from 1 USD/5.05 BRL on May 8 to 1 USD/5.40 BRL on June 23).
