Domestic coffee prices, updated at 4:30 AM on September 16, 2024, are as follows: Today's domestic coffee market ranges from 123,500 to 124,000 VND. The average purchase price in the Central Highlands provinces is currently 123,600 VND/kg, with the highest purchase price in Dak Nong and Dak Lak provinces at 124,000 VND/kg.
Specifically, the purchase price of coffee in Gia Lai province (Chu Prong) remained unchanged at 123,900 VND/kg compared to yesterday, while in Pleiku and La Grai it was 123,800 VND/kg. In Kon Tum province, the price remained stable at 123,900 VND/kg compared to yesterday; in Dak Nong province, coffee was purchased at 124,000 VND/kg, remaining unchanged compared to yesterday.
The price of bulk green coffee beans (green coffee beans, fresh coffee beans) in Lam Dong province, in districts such as Bao Loc, Di Linh, and Lam Ha, remains unchanged compared to yesterday at 123,500 VND/kg.
Today's coffee prices (September 16th) in Dak Lak province are unchanged at approximately 124,000 VND/kg in Cu M'gar district, while in Ea H'leo district and Buon Ho town, the price is 123,900 VND/kg.
In fact, about half a month ago, as winter in Brazil was coming to an end, many people didn't believe that Robusta coffee prices would surpass $5,000 per ton. But now it has happened, and not only that, Robusta coffee prices are now very high, well above $5,000 per ton.
With the current unfavorable weather conditions in Brazil due to a lack of rain in recent times, resulting in very low soil moisture levels, there are concerns that both types of coffee plants will lack the vigor to flower for next year's crop, especially in the context of a global coffee shortage.
Certified Arabica coffee holdings on the New York exchange increased by 3,580 bags as of last Thursday, reaching 858,474 bags.
The price difference between November Robusta and December Arabica, after conversion to cents per pound, narrowed at the end of the week's trading, with Robusta now only 19.11 cents/pound lower than Arabica. This is a very favorable price for Robusta.
Brazilian coffee growers are continuing to slow their sales pace, after having accelerated trade flows in the past month, taking advantage of favorable prices. A SAFRAS survey shows that, as of September 10th, sales by coffee growers accounted for approximately 54% of Brazil's 2024/25 coffee crop. This represents a 14 percentage point increase compared to the previous month. The strong sales progress has pushed trade flows higher than the level of the same period last year, which was around 50% of the crop sold, and is also the average for the past five years from 2019 to 2023.
Arabica coffee sales accounted for 48% of production, slightly higher than the same period last year (47%) but still lower than the five-year average of around 52%. The sustained high prices, coupled with doubts about Brazil's next coffee crop, have curbed sales. This price scenario has actually made growers quite comfortable continuing their cautious approach. Unless prices fall sharply, they are unlikely to change this stance.
Conillon/Robusta trading activity has surged and now accounts for 66% of production as of early September. Consequently, current sales have exceeded the same period last year (57%) and the 5-year average (56%). Lower-than-expected crop yields amidst extremely high prices, driven by aggressive exporters, explain the strong acceleration in sales of Brazilian conillon/Robusta coffee. The market continues to focus on exports, with the domestic industry limiting conillon purchases and increasing Arabica in its roasting blends.
In the Robusta market, a 12.1% decrease in Vietnamese coffee exports during the first eight months of the year continues to put pressure on prices. In Vietnam, coffee cultivation areas cannot be expanded due to fierce competition from products like durian and pepper, leading farmers in the Central Highlands to intensify replanting efforts to improve productivity.
According to experts, world coffee prices will continue to fluctuate sharply from now until the end of 2024 due to bad weather, transportation disruptions, and a tightening legal environment in many countries. Some experts predict that tensions will ease in 2025, but prices in the long term are still trending upwards due to climate change and other factors.
