Coffee price today April 22: US reciprocal tax still 'haunts'

Coffee prices are already high today and will be further exacerbated for US consumers if reciprocal tariffs are imposed.

The domestic coffee market is trading quietly with prices fluctuating around VND130,000/kg on the morning of April 22. Meanwhile, the London (UK) exchange - which specializes in trading Robusta coffee - is still temporarily closed due to the Easter holiday.

Before the holiday, the contract price for Robusta coffee delivery in May 2025 was recorded at 5,253 USD/ton.

Mr. Nguyen Nam Hai, Chairman of the Vietnam Coffee and Cocoa Association (VICOFA), said that although US President Donald Trump announced a 90-day postponement of the application of reciprocal taxes to facilitate negotiations with other countries, goods exported to the US are still subject to a base tax rate of 10%.

The US tax policy is causing many difficulties for the global coffee industry, especially coffee producing and exporting countries like Vietnam.

Recently, Ms. Vanusia Nogueira - Executive Director of the International Coffee Organization (ICO), of which Vietnam is a member - sent a letter to Mr. Marco Rubio, US Secretary of State, suggesting considering reducing coffee import tax to the lowest level, or even eliminating the tax.

In her letter, Ms. Nogueira emphasized that the majority of coffee consumed in the United States is imported, as the United States has only a few small regions such as Hawaii and Puerto Rico where coffee can be grown. It is estimated that about two-thirds of adults in the United States consume coffee every day.

As the world's largest coffee consumer, the US accounts for 15.2% of total global consumption, with imports amounting to $7.4 billion. If tariffs of 10% - 47% are applied, the impact on product prices will be significant.

Tariffs would drive up the price of coffee for consumers, exacerbating the already high prices. As a result, the $343 billion-a-year U.S. coffee industry, which supports 2.2 million U.S. jobs, would be negatively impacted.

According to ICO, Coffee is produced by 25 million smallholder farmers, providing employment for at least 100 million rural people in the Americas, Asia, Africa, etc. Coffee is a driving force for economic development and social stability in these regions.

Arabica fell sharply

At the end of the trading session on April 22, after a 3-day holiday, the New York Stock Exchange - USA closed in red, down 2.02% - 2.32%. The May 2025 delivery period decreased by 190 USD/ton, to 8,090 USD/ton.
