World coffee prices fell at the end of the week when the USD turned green again, but increased for the whole week.

At the end of the week, Robusta coffee futures for January 2025 delivery increased by 97 USD/ton. Arabica coffee futures for December delivery increased by 10.4 cents/lb. Robusta coffee had a week of increase after 5 consecutive weeks of sharp decline.

Coffee prices, especially Robusta, recovered after 5 weeks of decline thanks to factors: The US Federal Reserve (Fed) adjusted interest rate down by 0.25% on November 7. The Fed's move caused the USD index to fall sharply and boosted purchasing power for coffee.

Arabica prices hit a three-week high, while Robusta hit a one-week high on concerns that drought in Brazil could cut production. Rainfall in Minas Gerais, Brazil’s largest Arabica growing region, was just 27.4 mm, about 64% of the historical average, according to Somar Meteorologia.

In addition, developments in the US presidential election also contributed to the turmoil in the currency market, affecting commodity prices.

In recent days, the coffee market has been continuously adjusting according to the fluctuations of the USD. The greenback increases, coffee decreases and vice versa. In the first 3 days of the week when the US election results were not yet available, the market fluctuated within a narrow range, but in the last days of the week after Mr. Trump was elected US President, the market fluctuated strongly above 3 digits.

At the start of the 2024/25 crop year, domestic coffee prices remain very high compared to previous years. Harvest has just begun and work will continue until the end of the year.

Robusta prices were also supported by concerns that storm No. 7 in the East Sea could cause heavy rains in the Central Highlands, disrupting harvests. However, the storm is likely to dissipate before making landfall, with little impact on the Central Highlands.

However, the coffee market quickly stabilized after the International Coffee Organization (ICO) reported that global coffee exports in September increased by 25% year-on-year to 10.76 million bags, and total exports for the crop year increased by 11.7% to 137.27 million bags. Notably, exports from South America increased by 30.8% in September, bringing the region's crop year exports to 66.13 million bags, up 30.7% year-on-year.
